  • Dog-friendly self-catering lodges in 28 acres of natural woodland
  • A 15-minute drive to Findhorn; 30 minutes to Cairngorms National Park
  • Barbecue provided for each lodge; shared laundry and information lodge
Like the sound of scampering around the woods, hiking over the Moray coast and barbecuing from the comfort of your fully self-catering timber lodge in the Highlands and Islands? Take a trip to Tullochwood Lodges, set in 28 acres of natural native woodland with principal species like Scots pine and silver birch and a gorgeous lochan. Get a little lost in the woods, have an unhurried outdoor meal at your lodge and pick up games and maps of local hikes from the fully-equipped laundry and information lodge shared by all guests. There’s a selection of DVDs, books and board games over there too. One other big perk? As a dog-friendly site, canine friends can join in with the action. And what might that action be? Well, you might want to tick off a few forest and beach walks. The Cairngorms National Park is accessible from half an hour’s drive for hiking, cycling, gold, a sled dog centre and the UK’s first bridge-based bungee (if you’re daring enough to try, that is). There are plenty of golf courses a short drive away too and the exciting annual Highland Games are held in the local area every July. All these comfy lodges are crafted from timber, so they blend in with the woodland setting very nicely. Of course, they’re all finished to a high (and homely) standard too, with a fully equipped kitchen. Just pick up all the little treats and ingredients you need from Forres, 10 minutes’ drive away, which has shops and sports like tennis, golf and swimming.

Local attractions

Speyside’s whisky region is well within reach… the nine whisky distilleries on The Malt Whisky Trail (around 20 minutes’ drive) run tours and tastings to introduce you to the boozy Scottish speciality. You might want to plan your cruise on Loch Ness (from an hour) on a different day, as well as any fishing, horse-riding, skiing, birdwatching or watersports in Findhorn (15 minutes). Another spot that will raise your heartrate is the Landmark Forest Adventure Park (45 minutes), which has a climbing wall, maze and rollercoaster. Tick off Inverness (50 minutes) and Aviemore (an hour) while you’re here, along with a host of historical attractions such as Brodie Castle (15 minutes), Cawdor Castle (half an hour), Elgin Cathedral (25 minutes), Culloden Battlefield (45 minutes) and Fort George (40 minutes). Wildlife fans can get their fix at the Highland Wildlife Park (an hour and five minutes) or the RSPB Scotland Loch Garten Nature Centre (55 minutes). As for other adventures, trace the fishing villages along the Moray coast (from 15 minutes) or continue your expeditions over in the west of Scotland and Skye (three hours or so).
