  • Family-friendly site 100 metres from the sea
  • A two-minute walk from Southerness Lighthouse and paths to two beaches
  • Swimming pool, café, entertainment room and a couple of bars on site
Looking for a fine place to get your seaside fix? Get straight to it at Lighthouse Leisure. This family-friendly site is positioned 100 metres from the sea and two minutes’ walk from the historic Southerness Lighthouse, where there’s a footpath that goes to Southerness beach and Powillimount beach in the other direction. What might your days look like here? Well, you might want to go sea fishing along the coast or choose from the selection of lochs and rivers inland. There’s a golf course just 10 minutes’ walk from the site when you fancy a round, or other golf courses within a 15 mile radius of the site. As for your holiday wanders, there are both coastal and forest walks in the surrounding area. Those of you who prefer to tackle the land on two wheels can also find cycling trails in the surrounding area, especially at 7Stanes: Dalbeattie, 20 minutes’ drive away. The site itself is well-maintained with tarred roads and next door to a well-stocked shop for all your supplies. There’s a regular bus service from the village to Dumfries that takes 40 minutes and stops at other villages on the route. As a family-friendly place, plenty of attention has been paid to kids’ entertainment too – that includes an adventure playground and a leisure complex with a swimming pool (which must be booked in advance), café, entertainment room, family bar and adults-only bar. The site has been in operation for nearly 50 years and being family owned, it has built up a well-established, warm and friendly atmosphere. Dogs are welcome too, good news for those of you with a furry friend.

Liked: Close to beach

Disliked: Touring pitches hemmed in between fixed caravan pitches next to main bar. Water in showers, sink and pot wash was not warm Only 1 toilet door closed in ladies block Strong smell of weed around site, even at 9am. Lots of people seemed to be enjoying themselves but this just wasn't the place for us.

Liked: Location. Staff were friendly on arrival.

Disliked: We left after 3 hours of checking in - the tourers next to us were loud and there were lots of swearing from both tourers and static caravans. The pitches were in the middle of the statics which felt claustrophobic and we didn't expect to see the portaloos located on a permanent site. Not the best I'm afraid.

Liked: - Bathrooms were cleaned every day - Staff were friendly - Location of the site was great for going out venturing (walking to Southerness beach or driving to other beaches) - The pool was great (private hire) and the changing rooms were really clean. The showers in the changing rooms were great.

Disliked: - This site isn't suitable for those staying in tents - the small tent area is next door to the bar, entertainent marquee and the stinking portable loos. - Tents are crammed together in a small space - The water pressure is terrible - trying to wash the pots when the water barely ran was hard work. - Showers in the toilet block were barley warm and there were no shelves for clothes, just a hook for your towel - really difficult to get showered and changed in the unit. - The men's toilet block had only 1 toilet. (My husband wasn't happy about this.) There was no mirror in there either. - The arcade place was ok, but small. If the kids won tickets, there was only 1 packet of sweets om offer as a prize. (No options). - The shop on site didn't sell fruit or veg. We wouldn't ever return to this site, nor we would recommend it to other campers in tents or families with young children.

Liked: Amenities were clean and new, good to have facilities on site such as a bar, arcade, pool, play park. Nice beach and lighthouse. Good food down the beach at Carsethorn. Little local shop that dose essentials and ice cream.

Disliked: This isn't much of a camping experience, as you are surrounded by static caravans. There is absolutely no view to speak of from your tent, you feel like you are in a small town.

Liked: Entertainment

Disliked: Chemical toilet disposal. There's no hose to rinse cassette, you have to use the drinking water tap. The tiny drain for grey water is useless. Horrible beach full of rocks.
