  • Peaceful, family-friendly holiday park in the hills of Dumfries
  • Dumfries, Moffat, castles and cycle routes within an hour's drive
  • Bar and bistro, forest walks and private fjord for fishing
When you think of Scotland, what leaps to mind? If you answered stunning scenery, spectacular lochs and Mel Gibson, well… two out of three ain’t bad. Settle in at Dumfries and Galloway's Moffat Manor Holiday Park, just outside the small village of Beattock and 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Moffat, for views, rambles and relaxing by the water. This is a splendid spot for bikers of all sorts: if you like to stick to the roads, you can pedal along Route 74 from Beattock towards Gretna Green to join the famed Sea to Sea Cycle Route, or you can up the adrenaline with trips to two of the 7stanes mountain biking centres (Mabie and the Forest of Ae) for going-downhill-at-speed days. You don’t need to go far for holiday explores though: the site is on more than 80 acres of woodland, with loads of country walks along pretty streams and even a private loch for waterside strolls and a spot of fishing. When your stomach starts rumbling, saunter over to the Lakeside Tavern & Restaurant for a bite to eat and a couple of drinks, as well as a few nights’ evening entertainment. The Lakeside is only open from Wednesday to Sunday, so you’re on your own the rest of the week – fire up the barbecue if you fancy (an on-site shop has all the essentials and there’s a supermarket in Moffat), or head into Moffat or Dumfries to dine at one of the restaurants.

Liked: Quiet and very clean campsite. Bar on site which is handy!

Disliked: The play park needs a few more things in it. A few kids had to wait at the side until other kids had finished before having a go

Liked: Nothing. But I must add the staff were polite and pleasant.

Disliked: Grass pitches were on a slope so great ramps would have been totally ineffective. The site owners are not truthful. Had read reports about toilets in a state of disrepair. Rang site number which went to central switchboard. They kept me on hold for a while, while they checked status and told me that the renovations were complete. That was a lie. Toilets were portacabins, which also poor. Gents only had one working toilet. Also spoke to some who were staying in the sites statics, they too were non to pleased about broken promises and the state of the site. Waste point was appalling, so was the dish washing area.

Liked: I can’t say we liked anything.

Disliked: Tent pitch’s are on a slope and uneven ground, Grass hadn’t been cut, EHU more than 20 meters away, after reading other reviews we specifically asked if the renovations on the shower and toilet block where complete before booking, we were told all finished. It hadn’t even been started. Temp facility’s were in place, only cleaned once a day, never any paper towels, placed on muddy grass, no gravel path way leading up, so very dirty and slippy in wet. The whole place just looks run down, mainly a static caravan site rather than camping, don’t be fooled by the pictures. Lake looked like something from a horror movie. Unfortunately we didn’t have good weather which made the pitch even worse.

Liked: Unfortunately our hook up had no power and was one of 5 hook ups the same. Consequently we had no electric hook up all weekend. The toilet block was under renovation and replaced by a small and cramped portacabin toilet block. It comprised 2 sinks, 2 small showers, 2 urinals and 2 toilets one of which was out of order. The block did not appear to have been cleaned all weekend with campers traipsing in mud from the site. Away resorts did not inform us of this change before we travelled. Finally there was one sink area for cleaning pots which was without a roof so washing pots in the pouring rain was fun. The nearby town of Moffat was nice as was the local Grey Mare’s Tail but not enough to attract me back again.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Friendly staff, particularly the bar man in the club house, small but nice play park for children and lots of nice attractions nearby .

Disliked: Site is more of a static home park and camping right in the middle of this when there could have been a great opportunity for campers to camp near the loch. Furthermore a Large group of teenagers allowed to camp on the Saturday night and were still partying at 2am. Lastly toilet blocks closed so Porto cabins in place which were not great and we had to ask to be cleaned . Sadly will not return.

Liked: The area was nice, short drive into Moffat we had a lovely cooked breakfasg at Mutchies Munchies! We also highly recommend driving to Dalscone park if you have kids.

Disliked: When booking online we seen there was a playpark onsite for our daughter, however when we got there it was closed for works. The toilet blocks were also under renovation eith temporary toilets in place with no other facilities. We had to wash our dishes in the bathroom sink! We also were under the impression the lakeside tavern done meals, when we arrived we heard this was not the case. The grass pitches has been cut with piles of grass left, not ideal for toddler to play on and the tent ended up a mess inside. We were very disappointed and they really need to update their site so they do not lead people in with false expectations.

Liked: Friendly staff, bar on site.

Disliked: All pitches were on a slope, temporary toilets were not in best condition, no food was available in the Lakeside Tavern. Fishing in the overgrown pond was not possible and the shop had next to nothing in it.

Local attractions

You could easily spend your entire break on the site, but there’s so much nearby that you’d be missing. Stop number one should be the town of Dumfries, half an hour away – it was the home of famed national poet Rabbie Burns and there’s plenty around to honour the wordsmith, but the museum and Moat Brae (JM Barrie’s childhood home) are also worth a look. Turn your wheels next to stunning Drumlanrig Castle (which TV addicts may recognise from the second season of Outlander) 45 minutes away, to wander the gardens or – if you’ve timed your visit well – tours and tea in the grand house itself, which houses artwork from Sandby, Gainsborough and Rembrandt. If you’re after a quickie wedding, it doesn’t get much quicker than a half-hour car journey down the A74 to Gretna Green, where 18th-century marriages were performed at the drop of a hat (or hammer, in the famous blacksmith’s shop). The village still does weddings, but they need a little bit more notice these days… Craving a city day or two? The shops, museums, galleries and tourist spots of Glasgow and Edinburgh are between an hour and an hour and a half away.
