  • Small, dog-friendly site in the Southern Uplands of Scotland
  • Access to the nine-mile Meikledale walk; a 45-minute drive to Carlisle
  • River on site for paddling; 10 minutes’ drive from a pub
Longing to stow yourself away in Scotland’s Southern Uplands for a while? You’ll have plenty of time for walking, recharging and other simple pleasures at Bush of Ewes. This dog-friendly site is set in a walkers’ haven, right at the start of the nine-mile Meikledale walk. Other hiking areas in the vicinity include the prehistoric trail at Loch Hill (five minutes’ drive) and the Langholm Hills (10 minutes). Rise and shine, fry an egg over the firepit and then take yourself for a little paddle in the river to really wake yourself up. Birds and other wildlife are frequent visitors at this peaceful site, so keep an eye out as you go along. Facilities on site include four toilets and one shower. You might want to track down a Scottish castle or make your way to Carlisle (45 minutes) for a spot of sightseeing. The Lake District National Park is around an hour’s drive away too, if you fancy a day out by the lakes. The site sits on the A7, so getting about will be easy, and you won’t necessarily have to rely on your car, either, since there’s a bus stop right outside. The 95 bus goes to Langholm village (10 minutes), where there’s a small shop, a fishing lake and a pub/restaurant. Further out, Hawick (25 minutes) has a golf course, leisure centre, shops and local museum, while Canonbie (20 minutes) has a cinema and pretty stretch along the River Esk.

What customers say

A ripper spot! Clean facilities, friendly hosts & spacious sites. Farm animals are a big hit, especially with kids. Basic facilities but great value and a cruisy vibe for unwinding or checking out the local sights.

Liked Natural alarm clock with sounds of coughing goat.

Disliked One shower cab for entire campsite. Very noisy neigbours even after 11pm. Two nights they were loud after midnight. Owners didnt give a fek. Close to main transit road, when hgv pass was wondering and checking flightradar if any Typhoons flyover.

Liked Lovely campsite, easy to find right off the A7! When we arrived it was lovely and quiet, we found the stream nearby and all the animals were fun to see. Exactly what you need for a few nights stay. They even provided a fire pit drum so we managed to buy some wood from Langholm and light the fire at night.

Disliked Only one shower, but new toilets on site are better than the older ones. Also would have been great to have a tap nearer to the tents, especially if you were way down the bottom end it was a bit of a trek. We did also wonder why all campers/ campervans were put onto one side of the pitches when the other side was completely empty! It would have been nice to maybe have a space apart, whilst it was so quiet anyway but it didn’t affect our stay as luckily everyone was very friendly and stuck to the no noise after 10pm rule.

Liked I was made up with this site from start to finish. Facilities were so clean every day, at all times of day and night. When walking to the facilities in the dark, the site had little motion sensor lights to help light the path as you walk. The grass was kept very nice and the owners took pride in keeping the place in shape. There are animals for the kids to see if they like (no feeding as it’s not a petting zoo but plenty to say hi to if you have kids like mine who just love all animals - sheep, goats, pigs, chickens and a lovely dog). Across the grass field, a very short walk for even the shortest of legs, there is a lovely shallow river and a tree swing. Owners were easily contactable and friendly and the views were lovely in amongst the hills. Noise levels really low and despite all the farm animals close by to the camping pitches, there were no bad smells at all. Only thing I would say is take a portable potty for night time if you have little ones as you probably wouldn’t want to walk to the toilets in the dark as there is a little picnic area between you and the toilets which my kids wouldn’t walk in the dark or rain in the night. I think most with little kids would expect to have to do this anyway. No shop on site but plenty within a very easy drive either way on one stretch of road. If you take a cool box for the first night, there’s plenty of places to stock up nearby (with a car - not a walk). Wouldn’t come to the Scottish Borders in general if you have kids who need constant entertainment as it isn’t a particularly activity packed area within the immediate vicinity - it’s more a ‘make your own fun in nature’ kind of place, which suited us perfect. Overall a really lovely experience and low price.

Local attractions

The city of Carlisle (45 minutes’ drive) has a well-preserved castle that must have seen some serious action during its centuries-old life in this border city. Other attractions include a stretch of Hadrian’s Wall and a medieval cathedral. After all that sightseeing, take a rest in one of several green areas along the River Eden. For outdoor activities such as watersports, cycling and horseriding, you can make a beeline for Kielder Water and Forest Park (50 minutes). There are also wooded walks, plus stargazing events organised by Kielder Observatory and birdwatching (ospreys nest here). At the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (about an hour), you can admire the mudflats in the Inner Solway Firth, stretch out on the sand dunes at Mawbray Banks or check out the boggy pools at Drumburgh Moss, which are visited by curlews, geese and skylarks, depending on the time of year.
