  • Family-run holiday park with views of the Ayrshire coastline
  • A 15-minute drive from Ayr and walking distance to the beach
  • Pets welcome; on-site kids' play area and food shop available
Wake up to views over the Firth of Clyde and the Isle of Arran at Heads of Ayr Holiday Park, a friendly family-run site in southern Scotland. With a coastal location, a family-friendly feel and close proximity to a number of bays and beaches, it makes an excellent base for getting out and about on the Ayrshire coast. The site is just off the A719 coastal route, a handy location that makes it quick and easy to head south to Culzean Castle (20 minutes) or north to Ayr town centre (15 minutes), coastal golf courses (20 minutes) and Ardrossan (40 minutes), where you can catch ferries to the Isle of Arran or to the tip of the Kintyre Peninsula. Facilities here include toilets, showers, internet access, a food shop and a play area. Well-behaved dogs (on leads) are welcome. Away from base, more family-friendly entertainment is on hand a mile away at Heads of Ayr Farm Park, a fun park with boats, tractor rides, trampolines and lots of furry animals. When your mind turns to more practical matters, just head into Ayr for supermarkets, restaurants, takeaways and a railway station.

Liked: The young receptionist was very welcoming, and extremely helpful. The pitch was large enough, with a water supply. The views across the valley were stunning. The toilet block was spotless and there was a plentiful supply of hot water. The shop was well stocked. The walk don to the beach was beautiful, although steep, and the walk along the old railway track was even better. My dog and I loved this site.

Liked: Clean site Large pitches

Disliked: Shop (described as local village shop) was just the office with just had some very basic items, bread and eggs really. very expensive, and very small, we wished we had taken more supplies - wine was £11.25 a bottle, and tasted like a £3-£4 bottle... and didn't have a huge choice of anything fresh, ie salad. Just emergency items really. The write up on the page was for the sister site of Maidens Beach is on the same page so I think we thought that was what we were getting. The beach we had nearby was not sandy, shoal, rocks, stones, seaweed and rotten sludge running from the sheep/cow fields. Also unpleasant yellow foam running along the shoreline. No dog walks nearby. We had to run the gauntlet with traffic as also the roads nearby didn't have footpaths the whole way along so we were walking in the road. The showers were too close to the toilet cubicles so if they were being 'used' was very smelly. Family rooms, ie shower and toilet in a separate closed room where you would have privacy would have been better. The coastal trail was dangerous, taking you through cow fields where there were loose cows that would walk aggressively towards you, at one point we had to run into the sea to escape them... cows have been known to trample people and kill them so I am very wary of cow herds more than I used to be. Very difficult trail, not suitable for 'walks', more for seasoned, experienced, very fit and able hill/mountain hikers.

Local attractions

Bracken Bay beach, a spacious sandy spot with shallow waters, is about a five-minute walk down a footpath from the site that's well worth visiting. Once here, it's easy to join the Ayrshire Coastal Path and head south to Dunure and its castle via quiet countryside along the clifftop (or you can drive there in about 10 minutes). To the north, the Victorian seaside resort of Ayr (15 minutes' drive) is well worth a visit for a stroll along the seafront and to stop for fish and chips (Marco's is particularly tasty). The area surrounding the town also has a racecourse (15 minutes) and the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum (10 minutes), where you can see the bard's cottage plus manuscripts, books and artwork. Day trips from Ardrossan ferry terminal (40 minutes) include jaunts to the Isle of Arran or the Kintyre Peninsula in Argyll, which feels very much like an island despite being attached to mainland Scotland. For a total change of scene, it's also possible to drive to Glasgow (an hour) for trips to fab free museums like the Kelvingrove Art Gallery or Riverside Museum and its hundreds of transport-related artefacts.
