  • Luxury adults-only site a five-minute drive from Carnoustie
  • A short drive from three major golf courses; 20 minutes from Dundee
  • Dog-friendly; near to hiking paths; bar on site
Planning a coastal holiday adventure in Scotland but can’t find a site that will welcome your four-legged companion? You might want to consider staying at Barry Downs Park, an adults-only site between the towns of Monifieth and Carnoustie (five minutes’ drive to either), on the Firth of Tay, an area that (seemingly) receives the lowest rainfall in the country. In addition to paved and well-lit level paths, the luxury site has spacious (and well-spaced out) pitches, which result in a blissfully peaceful and private vibe. However, if you’re in the mood for socialising, there’s a bar where you can meet your fellow guests and exchange ideas for day trips, excursions and the best beaches for dog walks. If the weather is kind (and that ‘lowest rainfall’ statistic ought to be reason for optimism…), then the hikes here can be truly spectacular, whether you head to the coast or inland. Monifieth Beach (five minutes) is a vast expanse of sand with far-reaching views across to the other side of the firth and good birdwatching (you might spot curlews and dunlins here). Dog-friendly Crombie Country Park (10 minutes) has forested walks around a reservoir. This is also a top area to go golfing: there is a golf course 10 minutes' walk away and two within a five-minute drive. The famed St Andrews Old Course is also within a 40-minute drive of the site.

What customers say

Clean, tidy site with roomy, flat spots & helpful staff. Toilets/showers are spotless & warm. Pub's friendly, fair-priced. Bus stop outside for easy exploring. Most’d return, though some found check-in a bother & some facilities need more TLC during peak times/when staff are off.

Okay for a night

Disliked Feels a bit lacking somehow. We were looking to go for a walk but found it difficult because the main road leading to the site is busy and has no pavements.

Liked Can’t comment as we were unable to get access codes.

Disliked We booked and paid for a Motorhome pitch in advance but when we arrived the reception was closed. As instructed we called the number on the door - three times over the course of the afternoon - but no answer or reply to our voice messages so we had no access codes and had to move on and find another campsite late in the day

Liked Nothing to add

Disliked Checking in process was not useful, called the number and received no reply, ended up leaving the site after waiting for some time for a response, owner contacted us and advised would look at refunding but never received anything, if no one is going to be at reception then at least return the call/voicemail to advise what to do next, this was our first time visiting and was rather disappointed with lack of service.

Liked A nice area of Scotland but site did not meet expectations

Disliked We arrived on site at 3.30pm on New Years Eve 2025 and the site looked deserted. Reception was closed with a contact number on the door. We tried the contact number with no success and left a message and up to now (more than 5 days later) no-one has responded.
We spoke to a lady in another caravan who said they had experienced the same and had parked their caravan on a pitch but told us to search for a working electric point as most were not working. The very kind lady also gave us the code for the shower block. We hooked up and got settled and the electricity went off. All campers were frustrated and we had to fumble in the dark to find another electric point that was working and move pitches. There was no-one in authority on site to ask anything nor to support when the electric went down.
In the morning we both used the shower block, toilets were leaking and water all over the floor, showers were dirty and had not been cleaned.
We had been trekking Scotland and stayed in various campsites but Barry Downs Park was worse by a long way and would definitely NOT stay here again.
The experience has left me really disappointed. We have used Pitch-up many times and have not had any issues. I have now lost confidence in Pitch Up as this campsite was way below the expected standards.
We later learned that the owner was on holiday in Spain and quite clearly had not made any provision in his absence.
Shocking treatment and shocking quality so would not recommend to anyone.

Liked I like to try and give positive reviews but this is a bit of a struggle. Site was clean and tidy. Lady in reception who greeted us was very friendly.

Disliked Set our caravan up plugged into electric not working told by another camper not working since they got there. Informed reception who wasn't aware. Managed to reach another electric outlet. Another camper arrived reception was closed they tried to use same electric so we advised them. No one in reception and no one answer on mobile number on window so told them the codes for the bathrooms. Late afternoon power went off, effected about 10 of us, once again no one answered the mobile number left. Had to walk round the site to find working electric then it was dog eat dog to get our caravan moved before someone else got there. Quickest we have ever moved our caravan. Then set about helping 3 other campers move their vans as it was now dark. Still no contact from owner which we found out was on holiday in Spain!! Finally got sorted then receive a text at 6pm with the bathroom codes and informed they are trying to contact electrician on new years eve.
Morning after decided to have a shower, very run down and only Luke warm watee, no where to leave clothes so had to put them on the floor outside the door. Bathrooms by now were dirty.

Local attractions

Barry Mill (five minutes’ drive) is a working water-powered oatmeal mill dating from the early 19th century. What’s perhaps most surprising about this early industrial structure is its setting: surrounded by luxuriant vegetation and wildflower meadows. The stream that fuels the mill is home to birds such as herons and kingfishers. Although Arbroath Abbey (15 minutes) now lies in ruins, it’s not difficult to imagine how magnificent this 12th-century monastic complex must have looked in its heyday. The Declaration of Arbroath, defending Robert the Bruce to the pope who had excommunicated him, was drafted here in 1320. When in Dundee (20 minutes), make sure to visit the V&A Dundee, a design museum housed in a spectacular contemporary building on the banks of the River Tay. Also on the riverfront is HMS Unicorn, a 19th-century ship that hosts maritime-themed exhibitions, while the McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum occupies a splendid neo-Gothic building.
