  • Luxury adults-only site a five-minute drive from Carnoustie
  • Arbroath Abbey 15 minutes’ drive; Dundee 20 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; on-site bar and restaurant; fitness centre
Planning a coastal holiday adventure in Scotland but can’t find a site that will welcome your four-legged companion? You might want to consider staying at Barry Downs Park, an adults-only site between the towns of Monifieth or Carnoustie (five minutes’ drive to either), on the Firth of Tay, an area that (seemingly) receives the lowest rainfall in the country. In addition to paved and well-lit level paths, the luxury site has spacious (and well-spaced out) pitches, which results in a blissfully peaceful and private vibe. However, if you’re in the mood for socialising there’s a bar and restaurant where you can meet your fellow guests and exchange ideas for day trips, excursions and the best beaches for dog walks. The site also has a fitness centre with free weights and cardio machines, so should the weather not be suitable for a long hike, you can still get in your daily steps and heart points. But if the weather is kind (and that ‘lowest rainfall’ statistic ought to be reason for optimism…), then the hikes here can be truly spectacular, whether you head to the coast or inland. Monifieth Beach (five minutes) is a vast expanse of sand with far-reaching views across to the other side of the firth and good birdwatching (you might spot curlews and dunlins here). Dog-friendly Crombie Country Park (10 minutes) has forested walks around a reservoir.

Liked: Open all year

Disliked: Power supply, kept tripping out and almost convinced me there was an issue with the fridge and microwave

The extortionate rate charged for a dog, we have two and the bill for them equally a quarter of our last nights costs 25%. This wouldn't be so bad if there were provision for the dogs as is the case at Glen Nevis for example and they make no charge for pets.

Disliked: Power supply kept tripping out.
We had to run our fridge and heating on gas.
Power supply so poor we that the microwave would not heat food in fact we initially thought the microwave was no longer working and were on the point of buying a replacement.
Cost charged for accompanying pets particularly when there is no provision made for them like an exercise area.

Liked: Nice flat pitches

Disliked: No one to speak to, called reception but the number didn’t work. Didn’t realise you just chose any pitch. It’s completely unregulated, technically anyone could just rock up and park without even paying. Washing up area taps at sink didn’t work, had to wash dishes in the bathroom. Didn’t feel safe. Convenient stop over but would definitely not recommend, no one is friendly, just a weird place.

Liked: Nice big, flat pitch.

Disliked: Stayed on 2 jan - we do appreciate not many places are open but don’t take the booking if you aren’t prepared to provide info/facilities. Arrived 3.30pm and reception was closed. Called the number on the door to be told to find a free pitch and ask someone for the code for the ladies shower block as he didn’t know! (mens was open). There was a row of outside ladies toilets behind the shower block, these were open but toilets only, no sinks.

The park was quiet, not many people around to ask. First couple didn’t know. Asked someone in the gym, she said she wasn’t allowed to give out the code. I emailed and luckily got a quick reply.

Perhaps an email with this info would be a good idea, I believe this park is new to Pitch-Up. Just to mention - there’s no drive over for disposing of grey water. I asked at reception the next morning and she suggested a bucket which we don’t have but as it was only one night not a huge problem for us. Also the (single) water tap has a short hose attached and nowhere to drive nearby so impossible for us to top up our fresh water tank. These 2 things would probably put us off going again.

There’s a restaurant/bar on site but we didn’t use it. Shower block is okay, the lock doesn’t work on one of the toilet doors, we didn’t use the showers so can’t comment on how they are. Don’t think there was any Wi-Fi, I couldn’t find any option to log in.

Liked: Nice and quiet

Disliked: Place wasn't manned at all. Called when arrived to see where to go. Was told he would send a code for ladies toilets/shower room. The code was wrong so couldnt get into the shower rooms. Toilets there was only 2 that had toilet paper in them.We were told to park anywhere and hook up.Electric hook up point didn't work it was burnt out. Messaged the guy a few times but replied once then no response from anyone at all. I know it was hogmamy/new years day however if site is open then they should reply to messages. Website states there is a gym which can be easily accessible we couldn't get it that either. When we were leaving we could access the road as there was a van/car blocking the exit from both directions

Local attractions

Barry Mill (five minutes’ drive) is a working water-powered oatmeal mill dating from the early 19th century. What’s perhaps most surprising about this early industrial structure is its setting: surrounded by luxuriant vegetation and wildflower meadows. The stream that fuels the mill is home to birds such as herons and kingfishers. Although Arbroath Abbey (15 minutes) now lies in ruins, it’s not difficult to imagine how magnificent this 12th-century monastic complex must have looked in its heyday. The Declaration of Arbroath, defending Robert the Bruce to the pope who had excommunicated him, was drafted here in 1320. When in Dundee (20 minutes), make sure to visit the V&A Dundee, a design museum housed in a spectacular contemporary building on the banks of the River Tay. Also on the riverfront is HMS Unicorn, a 19th-century ship that hosts maritime-themed exhibitions, while the McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum occupies a splendid neo-Gothic building.
