Grass pitches

  • Quiet and scenic campsite in Britain's largest national park
  • A mile from Strathdon; an hour and a quarter by road from Aberdeen
  • Small on-site shop and animal petting corner
For spectacular scenery, there's nothing quite like a stint in the Cairngorms National Park. They do rugged and remote rather well in this part of Scotland – the area is home to a quarter of the UK's rare and endangered species, four of its five highest mountains and over 60 separate lochs. Exploring all of the above day after day is tiring work, so you'll want to find somewhere to rest up and relax after gallivanting through the Highlands. Enter Cairngorms Glamping, a low-key but scenic site in a quiet corner of Aberdeenshire. All plots here come with their own water and power supply and have an excellent outlook over the neighbouring countryside. There's plenty of space to spread out over the well-kept grounds, plus a small on-site shop where you can pick up local butcher/baker goods and locally made gifts. Cairngorms Glamping also has an animal petting corner, where friendly creatures like pygmy goats, alpacas and a donkey look forward to meeting you. Up at the top of a hill, there's also a naturally occurring pond, so dragonflies, ducks and other wildlife can be spotted too. Cairngorms Glamping is roughly a mile from the village of Strathdon, which is home to a small but well-stocked supermarket.

Liked: Very large site with plenty of pitches to choose from. They have also been levelled in some places, so you don't need to worry about levelling the van. Water and eletricity were provided at the pitch. Also, facilities to have a camp fire if you wanted. There were also plenty of showers / toilets and washing up facilities. The setting is also very nice and peaceful. I don't have children, but the owners had obviously put quite a bit of effort into having things for them to do.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: We visited for 3 nights as a group of 2 couples, another 3 friends, 2 kids ages 2 and 4, and 8 dogs! We loved everything about the site from the petting farm area to the mini adventure playground and the on site facilities. It was relatively quiet when we stayed in the camping field, a few others arrived for 1 night during our stay so we all had plenty room. Check in was easy we just gave details through the car window as we drove in. We pitched around one of the field corners so had our own little site, it was a very relaxed atmosphere and the dogs loved being able to wander freely (they don't bother other people or have interest in the animals - if you have a dog be aware there are sheep/goats/alpacas etc right next to the camping field with just a wire fence). They are all super friendly, kids need supervised as the little goats jump up for food which is very cute. Youll need walking boots or avoid the poo! There is a little shop on site for necessaries and also bags of firewood and feed for the animals, each pitch has a running water tap and a fire space. It was very clean, the field looked untouched and freshly cut.
The facilities were good - 2 toilets and 3 showers, showers were hot and powerful enough. There's a sink for washing dishes too to use. There's also tea and coffee served as well and cooked breakfast rolls you can buy from the little counter. Staff were lovely, very friendly and up for asking our thoughts on the place.
The park has a big flying fox, trampoline, swings for the little ones etc. Views are amazing. Next time we'd like to come and stay in one of the clamping pods with hot tub as they looked great and seemed to be popular.

Disliked: The only thing I can think of is be aware the water is VERY very HOT!!! I scalded my hand on the first day without checking first, my own fault, there is signs, so just be careful!
There was one of the loos that was dirty for a couple of days but there was someone cleaning so not sure if it was just missed.

Powered grass and earth motorhome site

Liked: Quiet, tranquil, wonderful views. Nice walks. Two play areas if you have children, also swing ball, trampoline, zip line. Pet farm animals. Freshly cooked breakfast butties are available. Small recrption/shop. Plenty showers and toilets, roomy. Washing up area. Chemical waste area for your toilet waste. Dark so great for star gazing. Very good recycling area. Fire pits on site to use which i loved. Take plenty torches if using toilets overnight as can be a little walk away from vans and tents for overnight. (Dont be hesitant with the steep little entrance on your approach this is the entrance. Dont be tempted to drive further along that single minor road.)

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Lots of space, flat pitches, good facilities, shop selling breakfast options, sweets, baking and coffees. Great phone signal for data. Cute miniature goats and Shetland ponies.

Disliked: A little bit unclear plots and what facilities were available. Did arrive as it was getting dark though!

A little bit far from main Cairngorms hikes at 40-70 minutes drive but doable.

Local attractions

Looking to lounge about locally? Goodbrand and Ross gift shop and restaurant is a good place to grab a bite to eat or buy a few presents for folk back at home, while the Lonach Highland Gathering and Games take place annually a couple of miles to the north. For further typically Scottish attractions, try visiting one of the many distilleries in the area; the closest is roughly 30 minutes away. The Cairngorms is also uncommonly rich in castles, including the well-preserved ruins of Kildrummy Castle (20 minutes) and gorgeous 17th-century Braemar Castle (40 minutes). Balmoral (30 minutes), the long-term summer residence of the British royal family, will also be high up on the list of those seeking impressive architecture, art and antiques. Your hosts also recommend taking the time to drive out to Landmark Forest Adventure Park (an hour), a kid-oriented spot with a climbing wall, high ropes course, maze and rollercoaster. You might also like to drive east to the Grampian Transport Museum's top collection of exhibits (35 minutes), or to carry on all the way down to the North Sea coast at Aberdeen (an hour and a quarter).
