  • Well-maintained and peaceful five-acre site in rural Aberdeenshire
  • A 20-minute drive from Banff; 25 minutes from Fraserburgh
  • Direct access to the North Sea Cycle Route; shared kitchen
It’s all about traditional outdoor holidays with fab farm views at East Balthangie Caravan Park, a site open all year round in rural Aberdeenshire where guests can settle down close to cracking coastal spots like the rugged coast of Banff and Buchan and the sandy beaches and dunes to the east. In fact, those bringing their bikes can get straight to the seaside pedalling, as there's direct access to the scenic North Sea Cycle Route. The folk here say that their aim is to recreate what outdoor hols were like in the 1950s: as such, what you see is what you get, with the only additional charges being for extras like use of the machines in the laundry room. This is very much a 'live and let live' kind of place, where guests have plenty of room to pitch up in stunning Scottish surrounds and take in the peace and quiet. The facilities here are traditional and well-maintained, including ladies' and gents' toilets, shower rooms with power showers and hairdryers, a laundry room with washing machines and tumble dryers, and a communal kitchen with a microwave, toaster and kettles. There's also a games room, where you can play pool, table tennis, table football or simply sit in the lounge area and watch TV or choose a book from the 'take a book, leave a book' library. Dogs are welcome here, but please keep them on a lead except when in the dedicated dog-walking area. East Balthangie Caravan Park is well set up for outdoor living: picnic tables have been strategically placed in some of the best spots for alfresco lunches. Crop growth allowing, you're also free to take strolls on the paths that crisscross the adjacent farmland. The nearest supermarket is in Cuminestown (10 minutes' drive). For a drink or pub-cooked meal, head into New Deer (10 minutes).

Liked Absolutely loved this site and will definitely be returning. The owners were lovely.

It was a lovely laid back site. It had a rustic feel and everything you needed was there. The toilets were lovely and clean with a little dresser for getting ready. The little kitchen had essentials you could borrow in case you had forgotten anything.

Liked The landscape/ peace and tranquility

Disliked Facilities- OK, but old and worn

From the manager: Ah, well, not everyone gets our 1950s traditional campsite feel. The facilities reflect that era, but with modern lighting, hairdryers, and power showers, of course. The lovely large antique sinks, old-style taps, wooden tongue-and-groove doors, etc., are on purpose!
Ref facilities/activities: Other than our World War 1 Pavilion facility, with TV, free book library, table football, pool table, table tennis table, etc, we reserve the outdoor areas for peace and tranquility. Indoors, we leave you to your own activities! Thank you for your honest and personal appraisal of our site and safe travels on-going Sally!

Really super friendly owners who can’t do enough for you.

Powered grass caravan site

Liked John and Anna couldn't have given us a warmer welcome! Pitches are grass - and very generous! Slight slope on some - but fine with blocks and/or ramps. Beautiful open scenery with fantastic views. Small but very clean shower block and toilet area, with lovely touches such as hairdryer and dressing table in the ladies! A handy campers kitchen - with microwave, kettle, washing machine and tumble drier - as well as the usual point for washing dishes. There is a Pavilion with pool table, table tennis and a borrowing library, also with TV and seating area - ideal for campers. Great place for dogs with an enclosed "toilet" area and access to larger walk round nearby fields. Perfect for those who enjoy peace and quiet, but also great space for children to play. Highly recommended - we'll definitely book again for a longer stay.

From the manager: Thank you, Roz for a lovely review- it's much appreciated! We'll look forward to seeing you again in the future. Safe travels in the meantime! J&A

From the manager: Hi Jessica, Thank you for a lovely review it is much appreciated! Winter mode at the moment, but hopefully the next few weeks we'll see the full toilet and shower facilities open as the site becomes a little busier and the weather is not below zero for prolonged periods... :) Sorry about the rain ! :) All the best J&A

Local attractions

Entranced by the scenery on site? There's plenty of things to see and do without straying far from base, with top picks being seaside strolls in Banff (20 minutes' drive) and tours of (purportedly haunted) Delgatie Castle (10 minutes). Aden Country Park (20 minutes), meanwhile, is a great option for picnics, barbecues and manageable trails; you can also poke your nose into a gift shop that sells local crafts and the artfully laid out Aberdeenshire Farming Museum. Got a thing for blinking beacons? Make tracks for the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses in Fraserburgh (25 minutes), a historic lighthouse – the oldest on the Scottish mainland, no less – that was built right on top of a 16th-century castle. After having a look-see at the largest lens collection in the UK, other old buildings like Haddo House (25 minutes), Fyvie Castle (25 minutes) and Slains Castle (45 minutes) are up for inspection. At a loose end on a Sunday morn? A rummage through the weekly market and car boot sale at Thainstone (40 minutes) should see to that.
