  • Longleat, Stonehenge and Avebury all within a half-hour drive
  • Ensuite bathrooms and kitchens; pub and farm shop five minutes' walk
Well, isn’t Slade Farm Glamping owner Martin a clever chap? Take a quick look at the pics for evidence of the gorgeous glamping units he’s built (by hand, no less) to house guests on his farm in the Wiltshire countryside, 10 minutes’ drive from Westbury. Those comfy units are now in place at the peaceful two-acre site run by Martin and wife Sarah, on the edge of the village of Edington and with stunning views of Salisbury Plain. Ethics of recycling and regeneration have been used where possible in constructing the smart units, but there’s no shabby chic in evidence here – it’s all bespoke well-equipped kitchens, ensuite bathrooms and underfloor heating to keep things cosy on cooler evenings. Fresh bedding and piles of towels are provided too, so there’s no need to haul along lots of kit. Each unit has an outdoor seating area for alfresco drinks and meals, and there’s plenty of space around for rural wanders among the grasses, shrubs and trees that make up the garden. Beyond is a huge swathe of Wiltshire countryside for walkers and cyclists to take in – the famed Edington Priory and Westbury’s chalk white horse are both within walking distance. Looking a little further afield, Longleat House and Safari Park, Stonehenge and Avebury are all within a half-hour drive and Bath is 40 minutes away. Even a short stroll is rewarding around here: a five-minute wander should get you to the local pub for tasty meals and snacks to go with ales brewed in-house, or to the farm shop for goodies to cook in your kitchen or chuck on the barbie back at base.

The Chicken Coop shepherd's hut

Liked: The accommodation (chicken coop) was cleans and tidy when we arrived, very cosy and just an absolutely lovely place to stay. Logs, kindling and charcoal are all provided for a very cheap price and the pub just down the road is lovely with a wide range of drinks including cocktails which we weren’t expecting! Would definitely stay again.

The Chicken Coop shepherd's hut

Liked: What didn’t we like? Lovely location and views, easy to find, good outdoor space (although no outdoor shelter so check the weather ahead!), the hut had everything we needed, was lovely and cosy. We only stayed for 1 night but it was perfect for us.

Disliked: Can’t comment on the local area/things to do as we didn’t explore from the site (it was a stop off trip)

Lily 1 bedroom camping pod

Liked: Extremely clean with everything you would need for your stay. Very private and quiet with gardens all around. Owners very helpful friendly and polite I would go back without hesitation

Disliked: I didn’t dislike anything. That’s a unique thing to say in this day and age but true anyway.

Local attractions

How’s this for a fine way to stretch the legs? Set out from the site to walk to the Westbury white horse in around an hour, amble back to Edington to put your head round the door of the pretty priory and then finish up in the local pub for a pint… a most satisfying way to spend a couple of hours. Those ticking things off a list of top UK attractions should do well out of a stay here: it’ll take around 25 minutes to drive to the prehistoric slabs at Stonehenge or the similarly ancient stones at Avebury, and around 40 minutes to the historic city of Bath to roam around the Roman and Georgian architecture of the UK’s only city to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There’s more swish architecture to be seen at Stourhead National Trust site (35 minutes’ drive) and at Longleat (25 minutes), where there’s a grand Elizabethan mansion, gorgeous gardens designed by Capability Brown and a safari park packed with exotic creatures.
