  • Peaceful Wiltshire site in the grounds of a 15th-century manor house
  • Bradford-on-Avon five minutes' drive; 20 minutes to Bath or Longleat
  • On the banks of the River Frome; wild swimming and cream teas on site
Ever thought you could feel right at home living on a smart country estate? Well, here’s your chance to give it a try. You won’t be staying in the medieval buildings themselves, but at Stowford Manor Farm you’ll set up in the gorgeous grounds of a 15th-century manor house in the Wiltshire countryside, about three miles from Bradford-on-Avon. And this small-scale site has another excellent feature – it’s right on the banks of the River Frome, with access to the water for fishing, paddling, swimming, paddleboarding and launching small boats. In fact, it’s such a great spot for wild swimming that the Farleigh and District Swimming Club has its base about half a mile downstream – and if you fancy joining them for a dip, you can join up for half price. The campsite itself is a fairly traditional setup, with simple facilities in the form of toilets, showers (extra charge applies) and hot-water washing-up sinks. Dogs and kids are welcome, and you’ll be allowed to set up barbecues and firepits as long as they’re kept off the ground. Logs, barbecue boxes and other goodies can be added to your booking to make life easy (and tasty…) As you might expect from a farm site, you’ll share the space with some animals (get ready to meet some pigs, donkeys and cows while you're here) as well as arable crops. What you may not have expected is that the site also has a lovely little tea room that’s open in the afternoons for cream teas and ice creams, and it also serves up wood-fired pizzas in the evenings (Friday and Saturday nights from May to August, plus other evenings in peak season).

Tagglemead - unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: The area, amongst fields with a river running through. The pitch sizes, or rather that you pay per pitch but size is not specified. We loved seeing the animals (duck and chickens) roaming. Staff were friendly. The showers were hot and for 50p, you got a good amount of time.

Disliked: Noise from the road kept us waking most of the night. Toilet/shower block not very clean. The donkey bit my daughter, it left teeth marks! Camp site not managed, lots of very noisy campers with loud music.

Liked: The setting is amazing, and the site is well maintained and peaceful.

Disliked: The toilets/shower option in the tagglemead field leaves a lot to be desired but is okay if you're not fussy

Tagglemead - unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: Donkeys and ducks for children and lots of people wild swimming. Farm building was pretty Nice rural location

Disliked: Road on other side of the bank was noisy. Very big campsite. Really far to walk to toilets for children. Couldn't see river because overgrown with stinging nettles.

Tagglemead - unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: Unlimited pitch size, we have a large tent so it was good that we didn't have to book 2 pitches. We had plans to go to Longleat so location was ideal for that. Pizzas looked great although we didn't actually try them as we'd brought bbq food with is. Nice quiet site meant we weren't disturbed going to sleep or first thing in the morning.

Disliked: Toilet/shower/washing facilities could do we some TLC in the back field, floor was falling through, they were pretty dirty and there was no hot water to get washed or wash up. It was a treck to the toilet block, in the middle of the night taking young children was out of the question. Struggled to find anyone that worked there initially to check in and then he didn't seem to bothered about helping us, his English also wasn't great. There's a 60mph road very close to the field where we pitched so there was some noise from there throughout the night, probably sounded worse because cars were travelling at speed but as a very light sleeper this wasn't ideal.

Cricket Ground - power optional grass site

Liked: Nice site, really liked the animals and the river. You can hear the road from the pitches but it's not enough to keep you up at night. The toilets are clean and functional, even if they aren't modern purpose built blocks. The pizza on Friday and Saturday nights was excellent. The walks on the other side of the road were very enjoyable. Phone signal is weak but part of the fun of camping is disconnecting for a bit.

Disliked: It was a little hard to find reception among all the different buildings, although it only took 30s.

Cricket Ground - power optional grass site

Liked: Ease of access; animals about the place; setting; spacious; well located.

Disliked: Welcome was a little grumpy and terse (“you’re late” - 2030, before the 2100 deadline stated) and I detected suspicion of a male traveller on their own. Facilities felt overworked by a large throughput of visitors (toilets a little tired, wash up covered in veg peelings). Bins not pointed out, and really inconvenient for Cricket Field users.

Local attractions

If you’d like to explore your immediate surroundings, you need only find one of the footpaths that runs from the site to places like Farleigh Hungerford Castle, Iford Manor Gardens or Westwood Manor. There are riverside walks galore around here too – either along the River Avon or by the Kennet and Avon Canal. A couple of the Avon’s top attractions are in fact its urban spaces – both Bradford-on-Avon (five minutes' drive) and Bath (20 minutes) are well worth visiting for their historic buildings. You may also like to take a trip to Frome (15 minutes). If you’ve brought the kids along on holiday, a trip to the safari park at Longleat (20 minutes) may well be on the cards; if that's a bit too big, consider booking a wolf experience at The Little Zoo (15 minutes) instead. For a more grown-up day out, perhaps you'd like to potter around Prior Park Landscape Garden (20 minutes).
