  • Quiet site on an equestrian farm with Mendip views in South Somerset
  • A 40-minute drive to Wookey Hole Caves and 30 minutes to Wells
  • Spacious grass pitches with pubs nearby and easy access to the A303
A wild campsite on an equestrian farm, Firtree Farm Campsite has commanding views over Somerset, from the Mendip Hills to the landmark Glastonbury Tor in the distance. And what’s more, you’ll wake up each morning on your spacious grassy pitch and see retired racehorses grazing peacefully in neighbouring fields. Simple amenities at this back-to-basics site include a shower block with portable toilets; an EV car charger and recycling facilities are also available. Access is easy, as the farm is only 10 minutes from the A303 at Sparkford, and there’s car parking by the pitches, so no lugging camping gear around for you. Although barbecues are allowed on site, there are plenty of cider pubs within driving distance (and even a burger bar at Sparkford Bypass, 10 minutes away), to keep you fed and watered if you’re after a break from cooking. It’s also only 50 minutes’ drive to Somerset’s north-coast beaches like Burnham-on-Sea, and the Jurassic Coast lies an hour to the south. Keen cyclists have the choice of both flat routes suitable for family bike rides, the long-distance challenges of National Cycle Route 26 (which passes through Sparkford) or some testing hilly routes in the Mendips. Somerset is steeped in history and culture, and days out exploring the county take you to great cathedrals, stately piles and medieval castles – and there’s masses to keep kids entertained too, from the giant stalactites at Wookey Hole Caves to animal encounters at Longleat (both 40 minutes).

Local attractions

You can find walking trails in abundance in Somerset, with easy family routes to the ruins of Cadbury Castle (10 minutes’ drive to the start of the path) and forest paths around King Alfred’s Tower (25 minutes). Tougher challengers are found in Cheddar Gorge (45 minutes), which also has some tricky rock-climbing routes. The backstory of British aviation is showcased in Fleet Air Arm Museum (15 minutes), while motoring fans can sigh over vintage sports cars at Haynes International Motor Museum (10 minutes). If exploring great houses is more up your street, you’re in the right county. The great estates at medieval Lytes Cary Manor (15 minutes), Tudor-era Montacute House and elegant Stourhead (both 25 minutes) are just the start. You might also like to explore the twin castles of Sherborne (25 minutes). Other spectacular Somerset landmarks worthy of your attention include the dramatic, Gothic-style Wells Cathedral (30 minutes) and the mysterious ruined church on top of Glastonbury Tor (25 minutes).
