  • Peaceful pop-up site on the outskirts of the Mendip Hills
  • A 15-minute drive from Weston-super-Mare; 25 minutes to Cheddar Gorge
  • Access to the Mendip Way; two country pubs within walking distance
Pop down to the pop-up site at Flittermouse Copse Camping on the edge of the Mendip Hills… the spacious three-acre site is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with some sublime views over the Bristol Channel, North Somerset and on a clear day, the Brecon Beacons. Those green-fingered folk among you will probably be happy to find that the owners here are rewilding their sloping three-acre field and have planted hundreds of trees and shrubs. The young woodland, pond and vegetable and flower garden all add to the earthy back-to-nature feel, as do the basic pop-up facilities including water, a sink, composting toilet and cold shower. Walking is quite the sport here, as there are trails straight from the field, including the Mendip Way, which runs above the top edge of the site for a hilly 50-mile hiking route. Other prime routes include the ancient woodland down the hill or Bleadon Hill, 40 minutes’ walk away, for more show-off views – this time of the Somerset Levels. A cosy country pub may very well be the place to go after a day's walking. Handily, from this site, there are two such places within walking distance or a five-minute drive of the site. As for supermarkets, there are several in Weston-super-Mare, 15 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

With all the greenery around the site, it might be easy to forget that the seaside’s only a short car ride away. So, whether you’ve got a thing for donkey rides on the beach – the stuff of Weston-super-Mare (15 minutes’ drive) and Berrow beach (25 minutes) – or watersports – on the roll at both Berrow and Brean beach (25 minutes) – there’s much to do. Brean beach has dunes and a Victorian fort for good measure, the beginning of a whole heap of historical sights that you could add into the mix. Those might include Glastonbury (45 minutes) for abbey ruins and museums (as well as walks around Glastonbury Tor) and Clevedon's Victorian pier (half an hour), which injects some history to the town’s watersports-heavy marine lake and beach. There’s a lot of action in the city of Bristol (45 minutes), especially when it comes to the art and culture scene or nightlife, but for those of you who are keen to check out nature’s natural hidey holes, there are caves and family-friendly attractions at Wookey Hole (40 minutes) and more caverns, this time with rocksport activities, a walking trail and a museum, at Cheddar Gorge (25 minutes).
