Windfall Orchard is a Somerset Levels site that’s all about the nature – pitches are set in a couple of acres of young broadleaved trees and orchard, with nooks and clearings to camp in. You’ll be surrounded by wild flowers and grasses that are mown just enough to maintain access and provide space to pitch your tent. As well as the pitches themselves, there’s also a large main clearing with a communal firepit for sociable evenings. Wood can be bought on site, but please note that fires won’t be allowed in periods of extended drought (and you won’t be allowed to light campfires anywhere else on site, for safety reasons). This area is an excellent one for exploring on foot or by bike, and the nearby River Parrett is a popular spot for kayaking and paddleboarding. A walk of about 15 minutes gets you to Eli’s pub (a quirky spot that’s known for having no bar…) and there are more pubs, takeaways and shops two miles away in Langport. Facilities on site are fully in keeping with the surroundings – they’ve been crafted by a local carpenter with an emphasis on rustic and upcycled materials. That goes for the compost toilets, the private woodland shower room and the communal kitchen area, where you can make a cup of tea and relax at a picnic table.
