Peaceful camping field

  • Peaceful pop-up camping on a working farm at Semley in Dorset
  • Shaftesbury 10 minutes’ drive; Longleat and Stonehenge half an hour
  • Dog-friendly site; animal feeding available; pub five minutes’ drive
When all you want is some peace and quiet in stunning scenery, make a beeline for Lower Marsh Farm Campsite, a simple pop-up affair on a working farm in the Dorset village of Semley. Set among 50 acres of fields and woodland, the camping meadow hits the spot for anyone – family, friends, solo travellers – looking for an old-fashioned, no-frills holiday under canvas surrounded by nature, livestock and wildlife. Something of a rural gem for the kids, the spacious camping field has a play area built from hay bales and ample room to run around – feel free to bring frisbees and ball games. Friendly farm animals – cows, sheep and pigs – graze in surrounding fields, so please give them a stroke (they’re comfortable around humans), and if your kids are up for it, the farmers welcome their help at feeding time. Facilities-wise, the site has toilets, hot showers, a washing-up area and clean drinking water. Barbecues can be hired from the owners at an additional cost, although there’s a popular pub in Semley (five minutes’ drive) serving local ciders and home-cooked meals; there’s also a tasty line in takeaway Sunday roasts or fish and chips. As well as being a renowned coffee hub, Semley Village Stores stocks all the essentials you need alongside cheeses, organic eggs and alcohol-free gin all produced locally.

Liked: We loved this campsite and haven’t stopped raving about it since we went! There’s animals to feed,a trampoline and slide to play on,a lovely bit of woods, fire pits and wood to hire and even food to feed the sheep, pigs and cows! It was the perfect camping experience and our little boy LOVED it! Wasn’t too busy but other families around as well. Really recommend!

Liked: Lovely tranquil site, the trampoline and tyre swing and open grassy area dor ball games went down well with the children. We recommend the site to anybody wanting a quiet getaway. Plenty of room to be far away from each other.

Disliked: There were about 10 families there this weekend, I think a couple more composting toilets are needed ... 2 toilets isn't enough. Also more sawdust please.

Liked: Small family run campsite on a working farm. My son could feed the pigs and sheep and play on the slide and trampoline. We enjoyed exploring the woods and walking to Semley village which has a great pub, village stores and milkshake vending machine from Church Farm Dairy.

Local attractions

Lively Shaftesbury (10 minutes’ drive) has plenty going on; let the kids loose in the large play park, swim laps of the outdoor pool at Shaftesbury Lido and climb cobbled Gold Hill – made famous by the ‘Hovis’ advert – for views across Dorset hills and valleys from Park Walk. Back down in town, browse the antiquarian bookshops before sampling some scrumpy cider in a local pub. See more of Dorset on a cycle ride or hike along the North Dorset Trailway (25 minutes’ drive), or have a wander through the folly-filled water gardens at National Trust-owned Stourhead (20 minutes). Fonthill Lake (15 minutes) is another pretty spot for family rambles around the shoreline. You might also like to visit two big-hitting attractions close by. Spend the day at Longleat on driving safaris through big-cat enclosures, or book ahead to see our near-cousins up close on Gorilla Island. One of the biggest neolithic sites in Europe, the mighty megaliths at Stonehenge (both half an hour) should also be on your radar; learn more about the stones at the interactive visitor centre.
