  • Fishery-based site on the edge of the stunningly scenic Dorset Downs
  • Half an hour from the sandy beaches of the Jurassic Coast
  • Large tackle shop and plenty of onsite fishing waters to choose from
Hoping for a quiet and peaceful countryside retreat close to an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty? Revels Fishery – a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the Dorset village of Middlemarsh – will tick all your boxes. Though the site’s also open to guests who aren’t interested in casting a line, it’s simply a dream for angling fans: there are seven fishing waters on site where perch, tench, barbel, carp, catfish, bream and chub are plentiful, and a large tackle shop is just an added lure. The site’s also well-placed for rambling excursions through the Dorset Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the scenic Dorset countryside. There are loads of bridleways and footpaths to follow right from the site, and walking fuel is a cinch round here too: nab some fresh eggs from the resident chickens and ducks in the morning and boil them up for mid-hike energy boosts. Not much of a hiker or biker? Head into Middlemarsh to clamber aboard the village’s bus service to Dorchester, Sherborne or (and?) Yeovil for historical sights, shopping and local eats, or just chill on site instead, soaking up the views of the fishing waters and Blackmore Vale.

Power optional grass and earth site

Liked: Countryside location next to fishing lakes. The site is basic but toilets are cleaned regularly and the shower is fully adjustable for heat and height. Price was good and i had a choice of where to pitch. Quiet time from 10pm.

Disliked: Road fairly noisy. Shower cubicle has nowhere to keep clothes and towell dry as hooks on door so close to spray. Bins were overflowing even though site was quiet. Camper van was allowed to pitch literally a few metres from the front of my tent despite the rest of the field being empty.

From the manager: Thankyou for your comments. I will point out that you did stay straight after the Bank Holiday week our busiest busiest week of the whole year and the bins in question were the recycling bins that we only get a bi-weekly commercial collection for and were actual emptied the day you departed and were the contents of this peak bank holiday week. As for pitches we only have 8 electrical pitches and although quiet the time you were here it was just these 8 that were all booked. One of a favourite features is that we do not pre-allocate spots and people are free to go where they choose over the 2 acres field on arrival. i have no baring where people set up and often praised. As people are free to pitch up anywhere i did not site the van on the next hook-up to you and was still a reasonable distance from you but you would have been free to mention to them if you felt too close and nothing was said to me however all the numerous other points you did see me about were dealt with i.e. right over the other side of the field someone talking to loudly and sound of texts on people phones and more were all dealt with i am afraid i am unable to furnish you with a totally exclusive empty field!!!

Power optional grass and earth site

Liked: Love the fact you can put your tent were you prefer and have as much space as you need. You don't get that often. The lakes were nice and we even tried our hand at fishing for the first time ever. The toilets were cleaned every day. The gentleman in the fishing shop who owns it was so nice and happy to help when needed, also when we went in for a cheap rod got lots of help from another gentleman who worked there. I like the fact you have the ice block exchange so our milk and food stayed fresh instead of wasting it in our cooler box.

Unpowered grass and earth site

Liked: Had a lovely pitch right in front of the lake. Peaceful and quiet place. There are no designated pitches, so you can camp anywhere. It's a basic campsite but there are showers and toilets also washing up station. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The tackle shop has everything you need to fish. Also there is some food to buy if you run out of things. If you don't fish then it would be a great place to use for a base if you wanted to go exploring. Will definitely be going again.

Disliked: Nothing

Power optional grass and earth site

Liked: Lovely site, lots of little walks to have around the outskirts of the lakes, the hosts were so nice and welcoming! Only thing it could have done with was a couple more showering facilities and another toilet but the block was kept clean, fresh and tidy! We really did enjoy our stay there and wouldn’t hesitate to book again.

Unpowered grass and earth site

Liked: Basic shower and facilities, but such an amazing stay and this did not bother us at all for the very reasonable price. We backed on to the lake which was stunning and peaceful. Owner was great and would help whenever he could. Facilities were kept spotless and if you have the chance to try Jen's ice cream van then do it. Would definitely come again.

Power optional grass and earth site

Liked: Nicely kept site, the lake areas are kept well, shop to buy fishing supplies and minimal groceries. I would call this a 'no frills' site. Adequate supply of toilet paper, soap etc in the toilet block. Undercover area for washing up. Always had hot water for showering and washing up. Good location for days out. Friendly chap who runs the site, always on hand. Cheap per night for what it was.

Disliked: Shower/toilet block, this very much needs updating or a new bigger one built. For this reason unless they were into fishing I would not recommend this site to a family to use as a base for days out Better toilet & shower facilities then I would.

Local attractions

If standing on the shoulders of giants has always appealed, make immediate tracks for Cerne Abbas, a small village 10 minutes’ drive from the site. As well as pubs serving local beers, the village has access to a National Trust trail leading up to the Cerne Abbas (very anatomically correct) giant. When 17th-century hill figures simply won’t satisfy history cravings, head instead for Minterne House and Gardens, five minutes from base. The house itself may be closed to casual visitors, but wandering the Capability Brown-style Himalayan gardens should more than make up for that – and the house itself is certainly pretty enough from the outside to warrant repeated gazes on strolls. Plenty else by way of history is within easy reach – the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Hayes International Motor Museum and the Tank Museum are all within 35 minutes – but taking time to explore nearby towns is a must. Dorchester (15 minutes) is a particular treat, with roman remains, Terracotta warriors, a Tutankhamun exhibition and Thomas Hardy’s birthplace to visit, but the markets, castles and abbey of Sherborne (15 minutes), and the railway centre, toy museum and Montacute House in Yeovil (25 minutes), are also worthy of car trips. Days on the sand might be all anyone needs on hols, though, so luckily it’s only 30 minutes to the famed Jurassic Coast and to seaside towns like Weymouth, where the lengthy Chesil beach, massive sand sculptures and harbour fort all await.
