Unpowered forest floor tent site

Liked: Great woodland site. Great facilities for the smaller group of travellers, including the amazing hot shower! Loved the firepit and supply of logs provided. No wifi means a perfect chance to switch off from modern life. A fantastic back to basics experience. Steph and her partner are incredibly friendly, helpful, and go the extra mile to ensure you have a great stay! I'm looking forward to going back soon.

Disliked: Nothing bad to say. Loved it!

Unpowered forest floor campervan site

Liked: Owner was very friendly, provided plenty of information by email and even texted us beforehand to recommend a pitch. Large, secluded forest pitches which were perfect for the quiet getaway we needed. Very quiet and peaceful spot. Shower and toilet facilities, as well as a sink, drinking water, tea and coffee. Firepits available along with firewood and firelighters. Absolute bargain for £10 a night! Definitely will return.

Disliked: Nothing, genuinely this is perfect for £10 a night!

Unpowered forest floor tent site

Liked: The space, the wildlife, the peace and quiet. I will definitely be returning to this gem of a place. Everything for a get away from it all camp is here! I can't say whether it's child friendly, it depends on the child. If they like wildlife and nature they'll love it, if they want entertainment they won't. As for WiFi it didn't even cross my mind!

Unpowered forest floor tent site

Liked: Howard's wood is very unique a cross between wild camping and camping with the basics We pitched up in the woods two tents and a dining shelter plenty of room and with the campsite full I swear we all felt we were alone camping in the woods with the rining of the church bell and all manners of nature including the rain we loved every moment. The added extra of the fire pits made snuggling up around the fire with smores and a wash up hut with a few extra bits just in case you forgot to pack the sauce pan or a tea towel. the best way to spend the last few days of the summer holidays and one I will remember for putting a smile on all the family Thank you Howard's wood for offering a unique experience

Disliked: No dislikes as it was exactly what we were looking for

Liked: We had a great stay this weekend with our two children (5 and 8) and dog. Really nice woodland pitch for our van with an area to sit around a fire pit cleared in the woodland. Friendly vibes all round and a play park and playing field a stone’s throw away! Would stay again.

Unpowered forest floor campervan site

Liked: Excellent value for money and a great base for exploring the Dorset coast, the pitches were easy enough for a camper van. The composting toilet kitchen and shower were rustic and functional and there were lovely touches of washing liquid plates and cutlery etc. Great for dogs and kids and spotting the red deer was the highlight 😊

Liked: Great camping spot in the woods. Loved how natural the site felt balanced with basic amenities to make a really nice trip. Defintely for the more adventurous and wild hearted. Unpowered forest floor tent site

Liked: As described, back to basic camping with a private area amongst the woodland to pitch up. All the amenities on the site were well maintained giving you the foundations for a ‘wild’ camp. Providing fire pits to all, making for a good evening around the fire with friends/family with reasonably priced bags of logs to keep fuelling the fire. The owners got in touch the week leading up to the stay and were approachable and helpful with any queries. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a back to basic camp site with your own woodland pitch. Given WiFi 5 stars, although none on site - mobile service coverage is strong all around the campsite.

Local attractions

Dorset packs a mighty historical punch, and there are several Iron Age sites to see locally. Hike up to the fort at Rawlsbury Camp (50 minutes) for spectacular views over Bulbarrow Hill and Blackmore Vale, or glimpse the sea from the top of the burial mounds at Eggardon Hill Fort (25 minutes). Time-travel forward to Saxon times to see the National Trust-owned Cerne Giant (35 minutes’ drive) etched into the chalk hillside above thatched Cerne Abbas village (half an hour). A day on a Jurassic Coast beach may be in the sightseeing schedule too; choices include the fossil hub of Dorset at Charmouth (25 minutes) or the soft sandy town beach at popular Lyme Regis (half an hour). Heading east, Seatown Beach (20 minutes) is a quiet shingle spot for solitary walks, while trips to the West Dorset Heritage Coast repay with scenic hikes along Chesil Beach (40 minutes) and the chance to feed the swans at Abbotsbury Swannery (35 minutes). If you’d rather stay closer to home base, tour the orchards and taste a drop or two of local scrumpy at Dorset Nectar Cider (five minutes), and if the kids have been well behaved, reward them with cuddly donkey encounters at Donkey Walking Adventures (10 minutes).
