  • Family-run site on a working farm with country walks all around
  • A 20-minute drive from Blandford Forum and 40 from Poole
  • Wifi on site; Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door within a 45-minute drive
There’s rural and then there’s Lowbrook Camping, a site on a working farm that’s grand for getaways among fields filled with cows, chickens, horses and numerous ducks in the thick of dreamy Dorset countryside. This spot in Belchalwell has been in the same family for four generations – since 1927, in fact – and co-owner Owen has lived here for almost 60 years. That’s a testament to how top-notch the scenery is – there are walks aplenty to be had from the park, including across the old chalk hill of Bulbarrow, part of the Dorset Downs and towering above Blackmore Vale around five miles from Blandford Forum (20 minutes’ drive). The UNESCO-listed Jurassic Coast is also reachable from here – renowned sandy spots like Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door are a 45-minute drive away. Link up your smartphone with the wifi at the park to search for other local attractions and activities, or have a chat with owners Owen and Rachel about where to explore. The Lowbrook Camping family are fond of canines – they have a spaniel and a small Jack Russell at home – so dogs are welcome on site as long as they’re well-behaved around other four-legged creatures. Other need-to-knows are that this is a tent-only park, meaning caravans and motorhomes aren’t permitted. Fresh water comes from a spring on the grounds and firepits are for hire, so this is very much an off-grid sort of place but there is access to bathroom facilities. If you need a night off from sorting your own food or are celebrating something special, have a chat with the folk on site: they can provide home-cooked meals or baskets of locally sourced produce on request if you give them at least 24 hours' notice.

Liked: Rachel is friendly and welcoming and we always enjoy her food! The toilet is spotless. The field is perfect, we enjoy wild camping so it is ideal. We got to see woodpeckers, bats, buzzards and more. Beautiful views and lovely to see the cows grazing. It is a working farm so naturally there are tractors in the background but doesn’t affect the peaceful environment. Can’t wait to return!

Liked: Lowbrook was perfect! There were stunning views of the surrounding hills from the camping field and the grounds were beautiful and well kept. Our host was absolutely lovely and greeted us with tea after helping us get to the campsite after our long day hiking st Edward's way. The vegetable lasagna and quiche were both amazing and really well priced. We really appreciated the chairs and table too! Nice to have a proper toilet to use that was clean and had hot water. It was far away from any busy roads which meant it was quiet and peaceful. It was also lovely to see the cows as we were walking in, and to have the cutest puppy come and keep us company. It was one of the nicest campsites I've been to and we just loved our stay, thanks for everything!

Liked: There was nothing to like it was all terrible, the worst ever camping experience.

Disliked: The campsite was very poorly run, the field needed the gras cut there are no facilities not even the ones stated and towel in bathroom were only changed once in 11 days so unhygienic, the family running the campsite kept entering our tent without permission and very very rude and unhelpful when problems arose, and tractors going all night every night and we were not allowed to make any noise.

From the manager: We are sorry that Kim was unhappy at Lowbrook Camping. And surprised considered the booking was extended by 2 days. Unfortunately all of the information on the review is untrue and it was in fact us that suffered due to several outbursts during her stay. We will leave the other reviews over the last 3 years of camping at Lowbrook to speak for the peace and tranquility at our site.

    Local attractions

Set off for Jurassic Coast hotspots like Lulworth Cove (45 minutes’ drive), a horseshoe-shaped section of sand known for its clear blue waters; just along from here is Durdle Door (45 minutes), a natural limestone arch sitting in the sea and edging a popular beach. The cliffs around the area are worth a wander or you could head inland for ambles around the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (30 minutes). Stourhead (40 minutes) is also in this direction, a historical estate with grand gardens on the River Stour, which has a long-distance footpath covering its course. For more walks, head to Hambledon Hill (15 minutes) and idle around the Iron Age hillfort, taking in the vistas across a vale and the nearby counties of Wiltshire and Somerset. Those craving urban times could wander to Wareham (35 minutes) for a spot of shopping in the independent boutiques of this sleek settlement.
