  • Wild camping on a peaceful family-owned farm in the Devon countryside
  • In the Blackdown Hills and 40 minutes’ drive from the Jurassic coast
  • Natural stream and farm animals; food shop and farm shop nearby
Feeling a little bit wistful for some wild camping? Surrounded by the Devon countryside and the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 40 minutes’ drive away from Exeter, Shutes South will take you nicely back to the basics. On site, listen to the soundtrack of the birds or scour around for wildlife… and off site, hike or cycle uphill through the Blackdown Hills to Iron Age hill forts or take a trip to the seaside (it's a 40-minute drive to the Jurassic coast). Share a slice of the peace with the farm animals around this family-owned farm. Things are rather laidback around here, as there’s a natural stream running through the site and plenty of wildlife. As this is a good spot for wild camping, all you need to do is show up, pitch up and unwind (with your dog by your side, if you wish). Create a tasty spread with a barbecue on site… there's a farm shop and a small food shop five minutes’ drive away, so you shouldn't find it too hard to get your mitts on some great local produce such as fresh eggs and vegetables. If you’re looking for a rest stop while you’re out and about, there are several cafés within five minutes’ drive of the site too, great for grabbing a hot brew or a sweet treat. If it’s later in the day and you’re looking for something stronger or a meal out, there’s also a riverside pub 10 minutes’ drive away alongside an old stone bridge.

Local attractions

The daredevils in the group may want to tick one activity off the bucket list with a go at skydiving from the Dunkeswell Airfield (two minutes’ drive). If pulse-racing activities are up your street, there’s also go-karting here. Further away, try riding a segway or paintballing in Ottery St Mary (25 minutes) or drive a digger around in Diggerland Devon (20 minutes). For activities that are a little more leisurely, alpaca trekking Bearhouse Alpacas (25 minutes) is good for a trot through the forest (and a new friend). Perhaps you might find more friendly animals at The Donkey Sanctuary (half an hour). A laidback day at the beach on the cards? See if you can find any fossils at Lyme Regis (40 minutes). Then, unwind on Sidmouth Beach (40 minutes) or hire out a paddleboard, kayak and surfboard, if that’s your thing. Exmouth (40 minutes) is another great family-friendly seaside spot. If you want to round off your trip with some thrills, a visit to the Crealy Theme Park & Resort (35 minutes) might just do the trick. Take your pick from over 60 rides, including rollercoasters.
