  • Small north Devon site just off the A39, five minutes from Clovelly
  • A 15-minute drive to Westward Ho!; 25 minutes to Bude beach
  • Play area, shop and firepits on site; weekly social barbecues
As north Devon locations go, this is a particularly fine one – Roey’s Retreat is at the midpoint between Bideford and Bude, and it’s just off the A39 for easy journeys to either (or a whole host of other beaches and attractions…) This setting isn’t all about getting out elsewhere though – it’s also a great spot for walks down to Clovelly, less than two miles away, or other rambles along the South West Coast Path and around the Hartland Devon Heritage Coast. A drive of five minutes or so will get you to the neighbouring villages of Hartland or Woolfardisworthy for shops and pubs, or you can stroll to the local social club a couple of minutes away for drinks. Owner Nick hasn’t just relied on location alone to make his campsite an attractive place, either – he’s also kitted it out with all sorts of handy features including picnic benches, firepits, a play area with swings, and a shop selling various groceries and essentials (where you can also hire any camping kit you may have forgotten – electric leads for the hookups, air bed pumps and the like). Toilets and showers are provided, as are a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point for tourers. On top of all this is a friendly atmosphere that extends to welcoming families and dogs and involves Nick bringing everyone together for a sociable barbecue evening once a week (though you can also hire barbecues to do your own cooking too). You're also welcome to use the covered seating area where you can shelter from the rain (or, more hopefully, the sun) while having your meals and drinks – it makes a nice friendly alternative to hanging out at your tent.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Lovely site, small but clean facilities and the owners were really lovely and helpful. Lovely chickens and fresh eggs available too!

Disliked: Paying £1 for a 5 minute shower after paying £25 for a pitch. Which means every shower was an extra £2. Also, nowhere for freezing ice packs which are essential in summer unless you’re expected to drive miles to buy fresh dairy produce each day.

From the manager: Hi Michelle. It does state you need to have £1.00 for the showers on Pitchup. We do have a chest freezer you could have put your packs in. Thanks for your review.

Liked: The campsite was lovely, not too busy or crammed together and we had loads of space on our pitch. The pizzas on Saturday evening were really great and the owners were very friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome! It's within walking distance to a couple of lovely towns and 5 mins drive to several beautiful nearby beaches as well. Facilities are simple but very clean and tidy.

Disliked: The campsite is next to a main road so it was a little loud with traffic sounds sometimes, so bear in mind if you are a light sleeper!

Liked: At Roeys retreat myself and my partner had a wonderful 2 nights . on the day of arrival we had previously walked from westward ho along the swcp and i had hit my head pretty hard on a tree upon arrival at the campsite it was raining and i was upset and crying as my head was pounding as we was sat there the lovely chap who owned the campsite had spotted our arrival and come to see us offerd us both a tea and sat us in the warmth in the little shop and we had a nice chat and made me feel better about my head. The toilet block was very clean and well maintained aswell as the lovely warm 5min £1 showers. our pitch was lovely and flat and there was a nice communal area to sit.

Disliked: the wether was the only downside but its devon what can we expect. theres nothing bad to say about this campsite

Local attractions

The nearby stretch of coastline has loads going for it, and plenty of variety too. Westward Ho! beach (15 minutes’ drive) is a great spot for a family day out, with a wide swathe of sand and some rockpools for the kids to poke about in. The water there has gentle waves for a bit of bodyboarding; for a bigger swell you’ll need to head to Bude (25 minutes), which also has surf lessons and kit hire. There’s a lot of history scattered along the seafront too, including the old fishing village of Clovelly (five minutes) and the excellent Tintagel Castle (45 minutes), a place infused with the legend of King Arthur. A little way inland, Hartland Abbey (10 minutes) is worth a stop too. Trying to keep the kids entertained on holiday? There are several places nearby to help out with that – top picks include the Big Sheep farm park (15 minutes), North Devon Wake Park and The Milky Way Adventure Park. These last two are only two minutes’ drive away so they’re very handy to have in mind.
