  • Well-maintained Devon holiday park a minute's drive from the A30
  • A quarter of an hour's drive from Castle Drogo or Exeter city centre
  • Family-run site with an outdoor pool and fully-stocked games room
Let yourself be lulled into the holiday mood with a stay at this relaxing Devon holiday park. Springfield Retreat is deep in the countryside – so much so that Dartmoor National Park can be reached within a mile – but is also a handy quarter of a mile from the speedy A30 road. Located within a quarter of an hour's drive of central Exeter, this popular choice is well-positioned for day trips to both Devon or Cornwall (the edge of which is half an hour away to the west). Springfield Retreat is a family-run site that's been designed with families in mind. An outdoor swimming pool is on hand to keep all members of your party active, while an indoor fully-stocked games room is a short walk away. Finally, a kids' playground should help keep any younger guests you’re bringing in high spirits. With so many on-site amenities, it may prove difficult to leave the park – but if you do, you're within striking distance of the nearest beach (30 minutes), the Jurassic Coast (from 35 minutes) and the smart seaside towns of the English Riviera (40 minutes). Handily, Springfield Retreat is about a mile and a half from the village of Tedburn St Mary, where a pub, post office and well-stocked village shop should sort out most of your needs while you’re here.

Liked: A lovely peaceful and quiet site with stunning views across the Devon countryside. Wardens so friendly. A bonus is the lovely swimming pool and the bathrooms are immaculate. We can't wait to revisit soon. Also great access onto A30 to travel around Devon and into Cornwall. No narrow roads to negotiate so all in all perfect.

Liked: Everything! The views were beautiful, it was peaceful and the showers and toilets were lovely and clean. The outdoor pool area was great, just wished that I had time to have enjoyed it. Claire and Oggy couldn’t do enough for me. My electrics tripped out and I hadn’t realized. They both were so helpful and kind, they even brought over a hose so that it was easier for me to fill my aqua rolls. They really are a minute from the A30 too.

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

With Exeter's gorgeous cathedral and quayside walks a quarter of an hour's drive away, city day trips are a very appealing option at Springfield Retreat. Other local attractions not to miss include Castle Drogo (15 minutes' drive), an elegant country house and mixed-revivalist castle from the 1930s, and Okehampton Castle (20 minutes) on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. While in the area, you could take the kids to Adventure Okehampton (20 minutes), an adrenaline-fuelled activity park where they’ll find plenty to keep them occupied. More family-friendly days out are in store just down the road at Crealy Theme Park (20 minutes), and it's very quick to get to the beach too, whether you fancy colourful pebbles at Budleigh Salterton (35 minutes) or the sandy shores of Torbay (40 minutes). Plymouth (50 minutes) has a bustling city centre and fab aquarium to drop by at if you're on your way to Cornwall, where top attractions include Tintagel's impressive seaside castle (55 minutes) and the unmistakable Eden Project (an hour and five minutes).
