  • Family-run Devon smallholding with eco-friendly amenities and fishing
  • Exmoor Zoo, Saunton Sands and Westward Ho! within 45 minutes' drive
  • Beach area on the River Taw for swims, canoes and paddleboards
A little slice of heaven in Devon, say the owners… and it’s pretty easy to see why. Lakemoor’s location is indeed rather dreamy, on the banks of the River Taw (with a beach area giving access for swims, paddles and launching kayaks or paddleboards) and with a lake thrown in for good measure too. This is a family-run smallholding spread over five acres, which you’ll share with the resident goats, geese and chickens. There’s plenty of ground to go around though, so you’ll have ample space for things like games, campfires (in the firepits provided, please), barbecues and generally scampering about in the open air. Now, if you lived in a place like this you’d want to do your best to preserve it as it should be, right? And so it is with the Lakemoor team too: this is an eco-friendly place with compost toilets, recycling and solar lighting, plus pick-ups for those travelling by public transport (Eggesford railway station is a couple of minutes’ drive away). Despite its rural outlook, this is a site that’s surprisingly easy to access, as it’s just off the A377 Exeter to Barnstaple road (and a little over half an hour’s drive from both). Local settlements are somewhat smaller, but guests have access to a village shop, pub and curry house in the villages of Chawleigh and Chumleigh (both about five minutes’ drive away).

Power optional grass and gravel site

Liked: We had a pitch for our tent with electric which was great for us. We were pitched opposite the animals so the children loved this. One of the owners Justin was brilliant, each night allowing the children to feed all the animals and get them to bed for the night. They loved it. The site had great washing facilities and the honesty shop was well stocked. We will definitely be returning and would absolutely recommend.

River Field unpowered grass tent site

Liked: A really lovely site. Uncomplicated but with everything you need. The kids had great fun playing in the stream and were encouraged to help put the animals to bed each night. The owners could not be more friendly. The site is very easy to get to. We chose it because it is close to where a friend lives, so we will definitely be back.

Power optional grass and gravel site

Liked: Excellent hosts. Enjoyed the walks around the small holding where we were introduced to geese that identified as both chickens and duck and my kids were thrilled to stroke them all. Situated on a river that was lovely to walk & paddle in, others were paddle boarding & kayaking in. We were on pitch 5 which was perfect for our huge tent & there was enough space that a second tent pitched there instead of the main field. There was nice road cycling & trail running nearby. It was a very small site which I loved. We used it as a base for activities on the North & South coast.

River Field unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Lovely campsite, friendly owners. Everything we needed for a great weekend. Animals to feed at night, geese and ducks living their best life. Marshmallows by the fire pit while watching the stars. Playing in the river catching minnows or visiting the local pubs for a fantastic meal. Recommend the Old Malt Scoop Inn, fantastic food and service. Very dog friendly. All in all a great camp site, we can’t wait to go back.

Local attractions

Time out in the open air here can be spent playing golf (there’s an 18-hole course five minutes away in Chumleigh), taking walks through the hundred-year old Eggesford Forest (five minutes’ drive) or tackling the Tarka Trail by bike – the UK’s longest off-road cycle trail passes handily close to the site. There’s no fishing in the river on site, so if you want to give your angling kit some action, you’ll need to head to Stafford Moor Fishery (15 minutes). If you’d rather head inside for some watery activity, there’s a pool in South Molton (20 minutes) – while you’re here, pay a visit to the Quince Honey Farm for beekeeping demonstrations and a great soft play area. To meet bigger creatures, take yourselves to Watertown Llamas (10 minutes) or choose something a bit more exotic with an outing to Exmoor Zoo (40 minutes). Or of course you could swap countryside time for coast time – the beaches at Saunton Sands and Westward Ho! are about a 45-minute drive from Lakemoor.
