  • A 25-minute drive to Dartmouth or Blackpool Sands
  • Firepit and barbecue provided; four pubs within walking distance
It’s a fine mix of seclusion and convenience for guests at Bow Creek Shepherds Hut, a cosy glamping retreat for two in Devon’s South Hams area. The seclusion aspect comes from the fact that there’s just the one hut here – so you’ll have the whole place just to yourselves (although you’re welcome to bring your dog along too if you wish). Add into this a spacious private garden surrounded by trees and a prime location on the banks of the Harbourne river – near where it merges with Bow Creek – and you’ll be in a most suitable location for time spent with just your other half, the sound of birdsong and a book (and perhaps a glass of wine…) And the convenience factor? That’s down to the location, about 10 minutes’ drive south of Totnes and with a very handy four pubs within walking distance. It’s all nicely thought out in the hut too – there’s a woodburner for cosy evenings, and a comfy double bed that folds away to create plenty of space in the interior. A kitchenette has also been included (with a fridge, freezer box, kettle and toaster) and an ensuite bathroom houses a compost toilet, walk-in shower and basin. Outside, a gas barbecue and firepit await for your alfresco evenings. Tucked away in this quiet little corner of the countryside, it’s easy to believe you’re right out in the midst of nowhere – but in fact it’s easy to find plenty of things to fill your time with if you fancy exploring. Perhaps a day in Dartmouth is your style, or some beach time on Blackpool Sands, or a hike on Dartmoor? All are within a half-hour drive.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: The hut was charming. Spotless and warm too. A large garden to ourselves and beautiful area. Couldn't ask for a nicer place to stay.

Disliked: The only thing missing is indoor cooking facilities. There is however a gas barbecue outside. Not easy to cook breakfast on in the rain! Didn't cause us a problem as we ate out.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: We had a perfect stay. The hut was very well prepared and equipped, and beautifully presented. The bed was extremely comfortable. We made good use of the fire pit and the bbq. The location was lovely, with a very quiet road to one side and woodlands to the other. The only sounds were the songs of the birds. Very secluded and cosy. No phone signal which was a bonus. We used the hut as a base for some adventures in the area, the location was ideal. There is a pub in very short walking distance with outdoor seating next to a river.

Disliked: We disliked leaving, both wanted to stay indefinitely.

A really lovely, peaceful and, unexpectedly, secluded place to stay.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: The interior has been furnished to a high standard, and everything listed was included - meaning we just needed to bring ourselves and BBQ food/drinks. The owners were also wonderful to deal with.

Local attractions

Getting down to the coast is a fine idea here – and there are plenty of different places to see, from the soft sandy stretch at Blackpool Sands (25 minutes’ drive) to the craggy walk around the Dragon’s Tail (40 minutes). Dartmouth (25 minutes) and Brixham (half an hour) are both great places to find a seafood meal, and there are several scenic stretches of the South West Coast Path to choose from too. Outdoorsy folk of all persuasions should find plenty to occupy them in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – including bike rides, walks, canoeing and wild swims. For something a little wilder, it’s about a 20-minute drive to the edge of Dartmoor National Park. Other options? Perhaps you’d like a ride on the South Devon Railway (10 minutes), a wander around the haunted ruins of Berry Pomeroy Castle (15 minutes) or a few samples at Sandridge Barton, the home of Sharpham Wine (20 minutes).
