  • Motorhome aire in the grounds of a hotel next to Dartmoor Zoo
  • Dartmoor National Park 15 minutes’ drive; Plymouth 20 minutes
  • Golf course; discounted meals at the hotel restaurant
Need an overnight break when driving through Devon but are after something more than any old motorhome stopover area? Consider Welbeck Manor, a small aire about 20 minutes’ drive from Plymouth, on the outskirts of the village of Sparkwell (and about half a mile from Dartmoor Zoo, so you might hear the occasional lion roar in the night…). This peaceful spot sits in the grounds of a hotel with a golf course; motorhome guests are welcome to use the facilities, so make sure you come with your appetite (there’s a discount on hotel meals – and at the bar) as well as your irons and putters. Dogs are welcome on site, but please make sure they are on a lead at all times. Most guests can access 5g on site; otherwise, wifi is available at the hotel. Spacious hardstanding and grass pitches have gorgeous views of the South Hams, and Dartmoor National Park is a 15-minute drive away – pretty handy for a day out, whether you fancy a birdwatching expedition in the Hanger Down area, a hike among prehistoric stone circles such as Brisworthy or Ringmoor, or just a relaxed exploration of the park’s rugged landscapes. Alternatively, head to National Trust - Plymbridge Woods (15 minutes’ drive), an area of ancient woodland and moorland where you might spot free-roaming ponies, or the South West Coast Path (25 minutes), which goes past beaches such as Bovisand, with golden sands, shallow waters and rockpools. And if your kids get a taste for exploring marine life, the Wembury Marine Centre (25 minutes) organises guided rockpool safaris on Wembury Beach.

What customers say

Reviews suggest a disappointing experience, with the advertised campsite not matching expectations. The camper van area is described as dilapidated, like a poorly maintained car park with rubbish. Basic facilities like toilets, washing-up areas, and laundry are reported as lacking. While one guest found staff welcoming, the overall impression is of a derelict, poor-value site, even at a low price.

Power optional concrete slab motorhome site

Liked didn't like it at all; the place itself is beautiful, but the area reserved for camper van is a shame

Disliked The advertised property was nonexistent; in its place was a dilapidated concrete parking lot, rubbish, and a collapsed building poorly insulated from the rest of the property. The space indicated as a rest area was covered in dog excrement. There were no bathrooms, or rather, they were located inside the main building, in a storeroom, and they smelled terribly of damp. There were no washing-up facilities or laundry facilities. This isn't a basic campsite like a "farm campsite", the owners actually turned a completely inadequate space into a camper area, adjacent to the customer parking area, simply by providing a couple of sockets to connect to the mains.
It felt like we were walking into a construction site where the rubble still needs to be removed. A truly unpleasant place.

Local attractions

On the outskirts of Plymouth, National Trust - Saltram (15 minutes’ drive) is an elegant Georgian mansion with splendid decorative touches, including exquisite Chinese wallpapers, plus a superb art collection. Its gardens are a riot of colour in the summer months, with roses, foxgloves and a fragrant orange grove. In Plymouth (20 minutes), the Hoe is a clifftop park with the historic Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, the Belvedere (aka the 'Wedding Cake') and assorted military memorials. At the foot of the cliff is the Tinside Lido, an Art Deco swimming pool. After exploring the Hoe, head to the harbour to see the Mayflower Steps Memorial or visit the National Marine Aquarium. Paignton (50 minutes) has sandy beaches with shallow waters for relaxed paddles, a pier with fairground rides and miniature golf, and (just out of town) the Splashdown Quaywest aquatic park, with twisty waterslides and a pirate-themed play area.
