  • Sustainable and peaceful glamping site in rural south Devon
  • A 10-minute drive from Ashburton and Dartmoor National Park
  • Composting toilet; private hot tub for each unit for an additional fee
Nature is very much at the fore at Wilderhus Glamping – this South Devon site is in a stunning natural setting surrounded by gorgeous greenery. It has been set up to be as sustainable as possible, using ethical producers and bringing in eco-friendly facilities like compost toilets, and has even won an award for its eco efforts. There's also an adventurous access to the site via a seven-minute walk across a field. One huge highlight is surely the Scandinavian-style wood-fired hot tub (with firewood provided) at each unit, which is only available for an additional fee. The hot tubs are all completely secluded, too – so you'll be able to unwind in the warm water while looking up at the sky or skinny dip in peace if you so wish… There’s a real feeling of calm at this rural location – it’s a fabulous spot for wildlife spotting, birdwatching and evenings of stargazing, and the 'tiny homes' have been well placed around the site to make sure that all guests have a good of space and peace to soak up the atmosphere. The units here are all completely individual, characterful and self-contained – each one has its own composting toilet a short distance away, a small kitchen area and a barbecue, plus handy extras like a cool box, lighting and towels. All the units are run by solar power, which can be temperamental if the sun is lacking. Heading out and about, your nearest town is Ashburton (10 minutes’ drive, and something of a haven for foodies with its independent shops, eateries and famed cookery school), with Totnes and Newton Abbot 20 minutes away. For those seeking more nature, the walking trails, wild ponies and ancient stone circles of Dartmoor National Park are just a couple of miles away. Water on site is from a borehole and springs, so guests may want to bring their own drinking water.

Airstream on-site caravan

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay at the airstream had a lovely get away, the drive there is a bit tricky the country lanes are tight, it was a bit tricky finding the entrance but once your there it is just you and the nature 🌳 we had a visit during the night which surprised us in the morning the airstream was surrounded with lovely cows my partner had a great surprise for his birthday 🤣 the farmer came and sorted it out straightaway! We did really enjoy ourselves and the bed is super comfortable, log burner is just a bonus makes the stay really cosy, would visit again!

Disliked: Shower was warm for 5 seconds then would go back to cold straight away

2 bedroom treehouse

Liked: Gorgeous, peaceful getaway in well thought out eco glamping accommodation. Our party consisted of me, my husband and 12 year old son, along with our friends (a couple) and their 2 year old daughter. Due the the ages of our kids, we stayed up in the treehouse (a comfy but small double bed and small floorspace) and our son chose to sleep on a roll mat on our floor (with his feet under the bed) rather than stay in the main shepherds hut. Our friends took the shepherds hut so the grown ups slept in the double bunk bed and their little one stayed on the double futon below. Had it just been our family, the shepherds hut would have been our first choice but it was quite fun and cosy to sleep in the tree house. The beds were all comfy and the shepherds hut had all the cookware, crockery and cutlery we needed, along with a full cooker/ hobs and running water. Even little things like matches, lanterns and eco washing up products were there at our disposal. It was all beautifully designed and had a very homely and cozy vibe. The views outside the hut were absolutely wonderful, looking down on a valley with rolling hills in the background. We all made good use of the hot tub and it was a very special experience to soak in the hot tub, while watching the stars and listening to the owls at night. I even treated myself to a lone soak early one morning to watch the sun rise and listen to the birds waking up. What a perfect start to the day! Andrea was helping out while the owner was away and I must say, she was wonderful! Nothing was too much trouble for her. She contacted me before we left to check if I had any questions etc, and she even raced home from work to fire up the hot tub for us as we were arriving quite late. In fact, Andrea even went above and beyond, as my son left his camping knife and she let us know as soon as she found it and even went to the trouble of returning it to us by post. Huge thanks Andrea!! Finally, we were very grateful of the free access to the woodpile for use in the wood burner and fire pit. Many places charge extra for this and it can get prohibitively expensive, so thanks for that!

Disliked: The only improvement I can think of is to add a big sign just before the gate. We arrived in the dark and, though Andrea gave us very detailed instructions, we missed the gate and had to reverse down the road to find it. On our final day, a lady drove down the lane to the shepherds hut looking for the Airstream van and had quite a time trying to turn around with our cars parked in the turning space.

Airstream on-site caravan

Liked: The Airstream is beautifully converted and very comfortable. Although off-grid, the solar power that is available provides plenty of juice for recharging phones, etc. The cooking facilities (including BBQ) are of a good standard. We had good mobile coverage (EE). The bed is very comfortable - we both slept really well during our stay. The hot tub worked as described (4 hours to heat up on first use, but then stayed hot and only needed topping up on subsequent days). The shower is very good and the water runs perfectly hot in both the shower and the sink. The location is wonderful with views across rolling countryside and very little noise apart from wild life and the occasional sheep and cow. Ashburton is about a 10-minute drive (along narrow lanes) and has everything you need. Dartmoor is a little further (about 45 minutes), as is the Devon coast (about an hour) - we drove to both during our stay. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and were sorry to leave.

Disliked: We payed a lot for our short stay, mainly because it was for my partner's birthday. Unfortunately, we were a little underwhelmed on arrival. The main reason for paying a cleaning fee is to ensure the place is clean on arrival. This wasn't the case here. The Airstream itself was very clean but there was old food left in the BBQ and old soap/sampoo in the shower area. Worse, the toilet was very smelly. When we complained, the owner suggested that it smelled worse because of recent rain. That may be the case, I appreciate that a composting toilet is not the same as a normal toilet. However, it definitely looked like the previous occupants had not been adding compost material to the toilet and we were not provided with either ash or sawdust on arrival in order to do it ourselves. In any case, if I'm paying over £500 for a 3-night stay, I definitely do not expect to have to clean up other people's poo when I arrive (sorry!). We made our own ash after the first firing of the hot tub, but that wasn't available until the second day. We were never given any sawdust. There was a cool box but no ice is provided so remember to bring some on your first day (I think this is mentioned in the Pitchup listing but we missed it). Finally, there was no welcome pack which we would have expected for glamping at this price point.
