  • Peaceful Lynmouth site with views over the Bristol Channel
  • In Exmoor National Park, 30 minutes' drive to Ilfracombe and Minehead
  • Food shop and wifi on site; five minutes' drive to Lynmouth harbour
In need of a Devon des res with smashing views? Lynmouth Holiday Retreat is a quiet site in the hills above Lynton and Lynmouth in the Exmoor National Park. As it's got direct access to the A39, it's a top contender if you're looking for a base to explore the Devon and Somerset coast. Needless to say, there's plenty of stunning scenery around here: keep your eyes peeled for resident wildlife like wild ponies, red deer and birds of prey. The surrounding countryside is also full of trails for rural rambles, including the long-distance South West Coast Path. Dogs are welcome at the site and direct access to footpaths makes it a breeze to keep Fido fit and healthy. Lynmouth Holiday Retreat has plenty of practical benefits too: facilities include a food shop, wifi, a washing-up area and a launderette to keep your gear spick and span. If you find yourself getting peckish, feel free to set up a barbecue, order a takeaway or head down into Lynton (five minutes away) to stock up at the supermarket. You'll likely want to linger here for a stroll around its picture-worthy cottages, fishing boats and genteel Victorian buildings. Alternatively, forage for your own supper by taking the kids crabbing down at Lynmouth harbour (five minutes' drive).

Liked: Great views from our pitch. Excellent clean toilets/showers. Some great walks from the site.

Disliked: Wi fi totally dropped out. Although fresh bread could be ordered. Site could really benefit from a decent shop as the nearest supermarket is 12 miles away.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback! Sorry about the internet hiccups—appreciate your understanding! We did have a complete outage on Tuesday 18th June, for internet and mobile signal. :( We have local supermarkets that are nearby - Lynton, which are well stocked usually. We hope to welcome you back in the future.

Bay View unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked: Very clean and well maintained bathroom facilities Well-tended and drained pitches Lovely hilltop location Very pleasant staff Nice on-site food truck Good access to footpaths (although very steep climbs!)

Disliked: Quite shallow, stony ground so hard to get pegs in

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Glad you enjoyed the clean facilities, stunning location, and friendly staff! 🌟 Sorry about the ground —hope it didn't spoil your stay! We do recommend Meteor Pegs - we stock them in reception as we know that being on top of a hill the ground can be quite stoney.

Beggar's Field powered grass caravan site

Liked: Spacious pitches, comfortable and clean facilities. Very friendly staff. The view over Lynmouth and the hills on the other side of the campsite are beautiful and we felt honored to stay there. As a direct consequence, there are no shops nearby (you can't have everything), but at least you could order fresh baked rolls and croissants for the next morning which was the first time we got this opportunity in English campsites. And we loved the delicious pizzas on Tuesday.

Disliked: Internet connection was unreliable. Sometimes ok and next, poor or even non-existant. Not the fault of the campsites Wifi I presume as my e-sim card didn't work either.

From the manager: Thanks for loving the views and enjoying our facilities! 🌄🍕 Sorry about the internet hiccups—appreciate your understanding! We did have a complete outage on Tuesday 18th June, for internet and mobile signal. :(

Valley View unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: Great views. Quiet site (when we were there). Very friendly and helpful staff. Showers had good flow rate and the water was hot. Facilities were very clean and tidy. Freezer for ice blocks and you can rent power packs to charge your phone. Really nice walks to and along the coast, the terrain is steep.

Disliked: The Valley View field has a drain running through it so you occasionally get a drain smell coming up through the manhole covers. Don't think the area is well served with supermarkets but didn't look into this too carefully since only there for a few nights

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review! We're pleased to hear you enjoyed the great views, quiet atmosphere, and found our staff friendly and helpful. Apologies for any inconvenience with the drain smell in the Valley View field; we'll look into addressing this promptly. For future visits, we can provide guidance on local shopping options. We hope to welcome you back soon for more coastal walks and relaxation!

Local attractions

Guests here have plenty of attractions and activities on their doorstep in and around Lynton and Lynmouth (five minutes' drive). For a novel way to travel between the two, try the funicular cliff railway that connects the twin towns. In the surrounding countryside, you can marvel at the geological formations of the Valley of the Rocks (10 minutes) or head out to the forest around Watersmeet (15 minutes) for waterfalls and an elegant Victorian tea room. Many head to this part of the country in search of outdoor pursuits, so sporty types may well be pleased to learn that Lynmouth Holiday Retreat is close to a stables (10 minutes), fishing lake (20 minutes) and golf club (40 minutes). To really get that blood pumping, hike some or all of the 14 miles along the coast to Combe Martin, a hilly stretch of the South West Coast Path that includes this trail's highest point. You may, of course, prefer a day lounging on the beach (and with beaches like these, who can blame you?). Top seaside towns nearby include Minehead, with its rockpools, and Ilfracombe with its castle and aquarium (both half an hour away).
