  • Well-kept and green site in the middle of the South Hams’ Avon valley
  • On the River Avon’s banks and a 10-minute walk to Gara Bridge
  • A 20-minute drive to Totnes and Kingsbridge; 30 to Salcombe, Dartmoor
If you're determined to have a digital detox on your next hol try Gara Bridge Camping in Devon’s splendid South Hams district. This well-kept site has not one bit of phone signal nor wifi for distraction... and is a simple spot right next to the River Avon for basking on the banks and fishing in the water. There’s no fear you’ll be far from facilities though, as a shop’s about a 20-minute walk should you be seeking some eats, and a 14th-century pub with a garden is a five-minute drive for dins and drinks. Check out a chilli farm less than 10 minutes by car to add a spicy surprise into your campfire cooking (blazes are permitted at this park). This rural’s retreat’s in a grand setting for swanning around south Devon, with creatures, the coast and cracking countryside not so far away. Towns including hippy Totnes (said to be built on mystical lei lines…) are 20 minutes’ drive to the north east, while cute and compact Kingsbridge (also 20 minutes) is nearer the coast at the edge of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Dash to Dartmouth (25 minutes) for walks beside the River Dart’s estuary, or go south to Salcombe (half an hour) for beaches like North Sands and Mill Bay. If wild walks are what you’re after, the forests, wetlands and craggy tors of Dartmoor National Park are also around the same distance. Things to do within walking distance include roaming by the River Avon (straight from the park) or journeying 20 minutes on foot to Newhouse Trout Fishery for a chance of reeling in rainbow trout. Not an angling aficionado? No worries – beginners' lessons are available.

Local attractions

The park’s a 20-minute drive to the sheltered bay of Blackpool Sands for swims and sunbathing. The South West Coast Path runs all around the Devon shoreline, so heading off on a saunter with sea views is simple stuff as well. Should kids need more stimulation than being taken off on a toddle or plonked on the beach with a bucket and spade, Woodlands Family Theme Park is a 15-minute drive for family rides and a falconry display. More creatures can be sighted at Buckfast Butterfly Farm and Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary within a 20-minute drive, and twitchers can treat themselves to a look at winged critters on a session at The Devon Bird of Prey Centre (half an hour from the park). Animals seen, blend some history into your trip at Buckfast Abbey 30 minutes’ drive away – a handsome place hailing as far back as 1018.
