  • Lakeside adults-only site on a rewilding project in Devon
  • A 15-minute drive to Bude’s beaches and Tamar Lakes Activity Centre
  • Fresh eggs and a hot breakfast available; firepit area with a grill
Like the sound of beaches, castles, cliff walks, fishing villages, woodlands and moorlands? Brackenwood Glamping is a mighty fine location for all of the above in rural Devon. Their lakeside location is on an active seven-acre rewilding project on a smallholding in Devon. That means you’ll see pygmy goats pottering around, as well as having views of Brackenwood lake surrounded by wildflowers. When you’re not out birdwatching, Segwaying or surfing down tiny or big beaches (or exploring the local castles, if that’s more your thing), relaxing is easy on site. It’s a comfortable set-up with a composting toilet, hot shower outdoors and access to a mains-powered shower a short stroll away. Sustainable, too – there’s solar lighting, rechargeable battery lights (for cloudy days and night-time use), natural materials where possible and natural firelighters. If you’d like a hot breakfast looking over the lake, that’s available for an extra cost. Fresh eggs are available from the smallholding daily, and for more food, there are farm shops within five to 10 minutes’ drive of the site. Afterwards, you're free to stroll around the wildflower meadow (there are easy-to-follow mowed paths that won’t disturb the wildlife). The surrounding countryside is home to deer, otter, stoat, swallows, barn owls and more local wildlife and the smallholding also has its own animals. There is plenty of car parking - the site doesn’t permit vehicles on the land, so guests are provided with barrows or carts to transport luggage.

Hedgehog Hideaway shepherd's hut

Liked: We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Brackenwood. The "Hedgehog Hideaway" cabin has everything you'd need and is situated in a beautiful plot of land: honestly, the pictures don't do it justice. On top of this, the hosts Angie and Sue were wonderful. It's clear they take a lot of pride in what they do: both in the quality of the amenities on-site and in the amazing job they've done rewilding the land. We'll definitely be back if we're ever visting Devon again. As an added bonus, Angie and Sue have a few pygmy goats which they let us feed, which was an unexpected highlight of our trip.

Hedgehog Hideaway shepherd's hut

Liked: If you want to be at one with nature then this is the place for you 😁. No TV or electricity means you can enjoy the peace and quiet, talk, or just read a book. Lovely hosts that attend your every need but also leave you in peace 👍 The most comfortable bed I've ever slept in 😴. A lovely bacon and fresh egg roll lovingly delivered to our door😋. We also had fish and chips delivered. We also lay on the grass to look at the stars as there is so little light pollution 🌠 To barely leave any carbon footprint 👣 feels just amazing 🥰
