  • Peaceful eco-friendly campsite on 270 acres of Devon countryside
  • A 10-minute drive from Exeter; 20 minutes from Dartmoor National Park
  • Based on an organic working farm with on-site farm shop and farm trail
Perhaps you’re keen to keep your holiday as eco-friendly as possible, or you love the idea of letting the kids get stuck in to traditional outdoors pursuits. Or maybe you’re just after the sort of base where you can easily mix up countryside, city and coast time as you wish… Whatever it is that brings you to this splendid slice of south Devon, West Town Farm makes a fine pick as a place to stay. The team at this 270-acre property have been farming organically since 1990, and they’ve done a great job at ensuring the campsite also has a minimal impact on the land. Pitches here are off grid, with access to compost toilets and recycling points – and, although there is car parking, you’re encouraged to make the most of local bus and train services, or travel by bike or on foot. To make that car-free life even more appealing, skip the supermarket trip and plan to stock up at the site’s own farm shop, which is packed with organic and palm-oil-free produce, including pasture-fed meat from the farm and organic veg from a partner farm. As for life on site, it’s all about the simple pleasures – the pitches are in one of the farm’s most accessible fields, between areas known as Chillies Copse and Fordland Brook. That means it’s great for all sorts of kid-friendly activities like building dens and paddling in the stream. There’s also a farm trail to follow – so with luck, even the most tech-obsessed youngsters should find something to entice them to look up from their phones for a while…

Local attractions

Once you’ve soaked up some of the stunning views from the farm, set off for more of that spectacular landscape with an outing to Dartmoor National Park (15 minutes’ drive). There are lots of places to get out for a walk or bike ride around the park, with some top spots being Cantonteign Falls (20 minutes), Haytor Rocks (half an hour) and Combestone Tor (40 minutes). The Miniature Pony Centre (half an hour) is a popular pick with the kids too. With Exeter only three miles away, it’s easy to throw a bit of city time into your schedule – and there’s plenty to do, including museums, the cathedral, the House That Moved and spooky tours of the city’s underground tunnels. Devon’s well known for its gorgeous coastline too of course, so bring along your beach kit for days out on the sand at Dawlish, Exmouth or Budleigh Salterton (all about half an hour away) or plan sea-view walks on stretches of the South West Coast Path.

Unpowered grass tent site (two person)

Liked: Farm trail walk was much more interesting than expected! Self service farm shop had everything we needed and all organic and local. Compost toilets were as clean as possible and the washing up/waste recycling facilities were great. Lovely mostly flat pitches, very peaceful. Watched the bats for a while in the evening.

Disliked: Didn’t bother us but we couldn’t make the self check-in work so don’t think we were officially there!
