  • Large adults-only park next to Chudleigh Knighton Nature Reserve
  • About 5 minutes' drive from Chudleigh Knighton and Bovey Tracey
  • Walking paths from the site; 10 minutes' drive from Dartmoor
Whether you've decided that your next trip is going to be all about sitting yourself down in stunning surrounds or strolling through them, have either – or both – at the adults-only Oakmoor Touring Park. This quiet and peaceful place set up by a couple of keen campers is in three acres of Devon countryside next to a wooded section of a Wildlife Trust nature reserve. Walks can start off from the site towards the nearby village of Chudleigh Knighton (a 20-minute stroll) and lead through Chudleigh Knighton Heath’s gorse, heather and grassland on the Ant Trail, taking around an hour all in all. To roam further, go forth towards Bovey Heathfield and Little Bradley Ponds nature reserves from the heath on a four and a half-mile hike in lush Devon countryside; the park's also about a five-minute drive from Bovey Tracey, the gateway to Dartmoor National Park, if an especially lengthy amble around the tors is what you're after. And if it’s mainly lazing you're after, resting comes into play on the flat pitches with fresh air and views of grassy meadows all around. You can lie back and rest while waiting for wildlife to appear: the owners have spotted species including deer, wild ducks and rabbits at this pretty park. Of course, it can’t all just be relaxing or rambling… when practicalities need organising, an essentials store is on site and a shop and pub are in Chudleigh Knighton. The park also has spacious showers, a washing-up area and baby changing facilities.

Powered grass and gravel caravan site

Liked Lovely quiet adult only site. Lidl, Tesco express and co-op all within a short driving distance. Very friendly staff, even printed clues out for us that we needed for a walking treasure hunt in Plymouth. Clean facility/ washing up blocks. Little library area in washing up block which is great if you’re staying for more than a few days. On Monday a fish and chip van comes on site, Friday is a local farmer doing bbq food which was lovely. There was no WiFi, but 5g signal was good most of the time.

Disliked Sadly the dog walking area wasn’t so great as you still needed to keep dogs on lead as it was in an overflow field. Also when we left my husband wasn’t given his £10 deposit back for the fob we needed to access the site, I’m sure this was an oversight by the owner as she was busy checking others in at the time. And by the time my husband realised, it was too late to return to the site.

Liked Lovely and quiet. If you want a relaxing peaceful break, this is the place. The facilities are immaculate and the wardens are lovely. There are numerous nature reserves surrounding this site so you're never short of walks. There's also a pub a short walk away through one of the reserves. I would definately recommend.

Liked We really enjoyed our stay, the weather was really nice, so that's always a bonus. The Campsite and the facilities were all amazing, toilets, showers, campsite, all immaculate. My wife especially liked all the nice little touches in the toilets and showers as she mentioned to Debbie the day before we left. I'm sure we will be back next year.

Disliked No dislikes. WE didn't have dog with us this time, but I'm sure dogs were supposed to be kept on leads around the campsite, we didn't mind that a few were off leads, but not fare when dog owners didn't realise their dogs were off wandering around by themselves, free to there mess in or near other peoples pitches.

Local attractions

It really is all about the rambles from this site… the traditional Devonshire village of Hennock, sitting 800 feet above the Teign valley, is under 10 minutes’ drive for treks around the Trenchford, Tottiford and Kennick reservoirs (plus plenty of pubs) while Stover Park’s 114 acres of woodland, heathland, grassland, lake and marsh is five minutes south next to a golf course. The traffic-free Stover Trail passes through here and links the historic town of Bovey Tracey with Newton Abbot; if you’re riding a bike, stop off at the cycle-friendly café in the former, which has indoor parking (about a 20-minute journey on two wheels). Also near this spot is the Dartmoor Whisky Distillery if you’re curious about checking out what Devonshire-made booze tastes like. For long journeys on foot or the saddle, The Templar Way starts off at Teigngrace (10 minutes’ drive), coming close to Oakmoor Touring Park and stretching on for around 18 miles towards rocky Hay Tor on Dartmoor.
