Powered grass caravan site

Liked: Wide open space with lots of views. Plenty of space to wander without coming across a major road. Very clean site, it still looks quite new. The toilet blocks, with washing and dish washing facilities, seemed well looked after. I also seen staff everyday, cleaning and emptying bins. The access to outdoor activities, such as high ropes, water assault course, and many more, also at quite a reasonable cost, if you find the right discount codes.

Disliked: The pitches were flat enough, but very close to each other, could of been 1 or 2m wider. Showers needed temperature control, as I found them boiling, and maybe a bench to get dressed on. We went to the shop, and it was closed. We went well within the opening hours, quite disappointed as we told the girls they could have ice creams. Luckily we didn't need essentials. Needs a few more signs directing you were to go when you come in. Nothing mentioned at the entrance about the campsite location.

From the manager: Hello, Thank you for reviewing us. Sorry to read that the shop was not open, will endeavour to make sure that if such a thing happens again it is clearly signed and communicated to guests.

Won’t be going back to this site. Has potential to be brilliant.

Powered grass caravan site

Liked: Site was clean and tidy. Plenty of showers and toilets for the number of people on site. Good location for beaches and activities.

Disliked: Pitch wasn’t suitable for caravans. Staff gave us various pitches as they had no clue that tent pitches weren’t suitable to pitch a caravan. No handles on the shower or toilet doors so children couldn’t get out the toilets by themselves. Chemical toilet had no hose or water supply. It was next to drinking water tap. Really unhygienic to put your chemical toilet into the drinking water tap!!! Slope/hill access to site had so many pot holes it was tricky to get a caravan up and down. We asked about activities on site. Poor customer service she could have sold us activities there and then. Definitely a missed opportunity.

Powered grass caravan site

Liked: The site is in an idyllic location both easily accessible off the fast main road, but also far enough away from it to feel isolated and close to nature. The views from the pitches are entirely of countryside with the houses of Westward Ho and surrounding villages in the distance. The toilet/shower block is well maintained and has plenty of toilets and showers as well as facilities to wash up. The site is in very easy reach of Westward Ho, Bideford, and a wide range of other attractions.

Disliked: We very much got the feeling that the activity centre was a much bigger priority than the camping side of the business. On arrival cars had been allowed to park so close to the entrance to the road to the campsite that it was not possible to get our caravan down leading to a frustrating 15-20 minute wait for the staff (who were very helpful) to find the owner and move the car. Access to the site is down a very steep and pot holed gravel track that wasn't ideal for towing at all, and on arrival to the pitches we found that the pitch we'd originally been allocated (flat and electric) had been filled with a tent, and that we'd been reallocated a pitch that was down a steep slope so unsuitable for putting a caravan on. Staff were helpful in sorting out our issues, but it felt that a small amount of organisation would have prevented both of the issues that made our arrival stressful. There was a small shop on site but it felt geared towards day guests doing activities. For caravans the pitches quite sloped, the chemical waste was a dedicated toilet with no tap (so hard to clean without splashing!). There was also no dedicated grey water waste. The site felt well suited for tents but not caravans.

From the manager: Hello, Thank you for your review. I remember this day! And in fact what you will be pleased to hear is that from this situation (caravan being blocked) we created the role of 'Greeter' That is a dedicated person during our busy arrival times to greet the guest in the car park and direct the multi use of the centre in the right direction. Its worked a treat! You are the second person of late to review a dislike for the grey water and waste water situation so that will be looked at swiftly. In regards to the Caravan use, this is the first year that we have allowed caravans onto those pitches so this feedback will help us get it it right, thank you. We hope the next time you visit you will see and feel a difference. We aim to make sure that all visiting guest whether activities or accommodation/camping are looked after and treated the same, I will address this occasion of you not feeling as important as the other guests with the team. Kindest regards

Local attractions

Adventure Camping is in the small village of Abbotsham, niftily placed for the best of Devon attractions and the nearby beaches of day trips to Croyde, Woolacombe, Westward Ho! and other Devon beaches. Less than half an hour's drive will see you at Saunton Sands, the eminently suitable surfing beach, and Braunton Burrows, the eminently spectacular sand dune system that's the biggest in England. Botany and nature buffs will find over 400 species of vascular plants and several rare species here; take a guided walk for the easiest way to spot. Closer to home, on the edge of the Taw Torridge Estuary and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Northam Burrows Country Park is a smaller but still very viewsome option for nature walks among its sand dunes, salt marsh and grassland. Access it from the beach at Westward Ho! and drop in at the visitor centre at the northern end of the beach, open to the public in summer. Heavenly hikes on the South West Coast Path are just a mile away, and nearby Bideford has two of Devon's toppest attractions for kids and families, the Milky Way Adventure Park and The Big Sheep. See also the fishing village of Clovelly along the coast to the south west, a day out among the greenery of RHS Rosemoor, another among the waves of surfing spot Woolacombe, or a drive to Dartmoor for yet more outdoorsy activities: you're on an adventure, after all…
