  • Small, peaceful site 20 minutes’ drive from Okehampton in rural Devon
  • North Cornwall surfing beaches and Dartmoor both half an hour’s drive
  • Shop, pub and takeaway 10 minutes’ walk; bus stop at the site entrance
Can’t decide between yomps across Dartmoor or the beaches of North Cornwall? Luckily, you’ll have no such difficult choice to make when you book in at Devon’s Shepherds Rest Camping, set just off the A3079 between Okehampton (20 minutes’ drive and gateway to the moor) – and Bude (half an hour) with its famed surfing breaks off the beach. This site is small and rural, a quiet place to escape the rat race with just a handful of grass pitches. You’re guaranteed plenty of space and lots of fresh air on dog-friendly walks straight from the site. Practical facilities include a pristine and accessible facilities block on the edge of the camping field, while the village of Halwill Junction (10 minutes’ walk) is well-supplied with shops selling fresh meat, groceries and everyday essentials as well as a pub and fish and chip shop. There’s also lots of choice for eating out in the local area. If you’d like to up your green credentials, you can park up your vehicle and explore Devon on public transport; the bus stop right outside the site has four buses per day between Bude and Okehampton. In summer, a Park and Ride service operates from just outside Bude, taking you directly into the town centre near the beaches.

Local attractions

So where’s it to be first? Dinghy sailing, fishing or kayaking on Roadford Lake (15 minutes’ drive) perhaps? Or a leisurely waterside stroll with any canine companions through woodland around Meldon Reservoir (20 minutes)? You can up the activity ante with challenging bike rides in Dartmoor National Park (half an hour), or hike to the neolithic Nine Stones Stone Circle (45 minutes) on rugged Bodmin Moor. If it’s the waves that are calling you, Bude and Widemouth Bay (both half an hour) have beaches with lifeguards in the summer and reliable breaks for surfers of all levels of experience. You can also go rock pooling with the kids or try body boarding in the sheltered cove at Crackington Haven (40 minutes). For a more cultural day out, catch the bus to Okehampton (20 minutes) from the site entrance and jump on a train to Exeter (50 minutes). Once there, check out the Gothic-era cathedral and admire the diverse collections (from taxidermied animals to tribal costumes) in the Victorian treasure house that is the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery. Heritage attended to, you can refuel in seafood restaurants along Exeter Historic Quayside.
