Secluded location

  • Secluded bell tents in a valley meadow close to north Cornwall coast
  • A 25-minute walk to Mawgan Porth; 15 minutes' drive to Newquay
  • Spacious, eco-friendly tents with shared kitchen and firepit
Coast meets countryside meets a comfortable stay at Polgreen Camping, where a small number of bell tents are set up in a secluded Cornwall valley meadow between St Mawgan and Mawgan Porth. Tents here are places far enough apart to give you a real sense of your own space – each one is large enough to accommodate a family of up to five, but they’re also great little cosy retreats for a couple. Inside, furnishings include a real double bed, a double futon sofabed (bring your own bedding or book a hire package), rugs and tea light chandeliers. Outside, you’ll have a covered dining area with table, chairs and a kitchen area that’s got a gas stove, cool box and various cooking and eating equipment. There’s also a central firepit area with wood provided for a sociable evening by the campfire. Other shared facilities include hot gas showers, drinking water sinks, a fridge and a device charging point. No sharing of toilets here though – each bell tent has its own dedicated compost toilet. So, the setup here is rather lovely (and eco-friendly, as you’ll see from things like the solar lighting and eco toiletries), and so is the location. It’ll take you about 15 minutes to walk down a country lane to St Mawgan for a village shop, traditional pub and tea room, or about 25 minutes in the other direction to reach the beach at Mawgan Porth. The sandy beach there has won several awards, but there’s plenty more to explore nearby so you may also like to use it as a starting point for a walk on the South West Coast Path, seeing if you can spot dolphins along the way…

Bell tent

Liked: The setting was beautiful, the bell tent was more than spacious enough for the 3 if us, but could easily have had 5 in there. Bbq and outdoor gas hob were perfect for our needs with both a lovely seating area for us and a larger outdoor communal space available. All cutlery, crockery, pans, sharp knives etc was provided and even a small cool box with ice blocks (refreezable in the communal fridge freezer). Showers were lovely and warm with provided soap, shampoo and conditioner. We had our own composting loo "hut" which was cute. Hosts, Simon and Sarah were super friendly and even left us with scones one morning which was a lovely touch. Kids also took a liking to the affectionate Oreo (one of their outdoor cats). A thoroughly enjoyable week was had with lovely walks and super surf and if you're lucky you may see a barn owl! Would certainly look to go back.

Disliked: Phone reception is dreadful (I loved being "off grid" but the kids didn't like having to wait to get out the valley for their "snaps"). I saw this as a positive to get them off their phones so didn't even ask about wifi!
