Small, peaceful and simple are the watchwords at Norwood Certificated Location, a touring site with grass pitches for Caravan and Motorhome Club members only (plus their kids and any dogs, of course). It’s on the outskirts of Rock in Cornwall, and staying here puts you within 10 minutes’ drive of its namesake beach as well as the sands at Polzeath. There are basic amenities only on site, so please note there are no showers or toilet blocks. Along with a rubbish and recycling point, it offers chemical disposal, fresh running water and electric hook-ups for the pitches. Otherwise, you’ll need to fend for yourself, so your tourer must be self-contained. You can find supermarkets for stocking up in Wadebridge (10 minutes’ drive). On those nights when you’d appreciate someone else doing the catering for you, it’s a mere 20 minutes’ walk to all the pubs, cafés and eateries in Rock – just please bear in mind that they get very busy so booking is essential.

Local attractions

Around the smart little enclave of Rock (20 minutes’ walk), you can bask on the sandy beach, play golf on the links course at St Enodoc (five minutes’ drive), go sailing or hire an outboard and putter around the Camel Estuary. You can also catch the Black Tor ferry (10 minutes) across the estuary to Padstow (otherwise it’s half an hour by road) if you feel like sampling the village’s famed seafood restaurants. Also 10 minutes’ drive away is Polzeath Beach and all its watersports options: wave hunters can hone their surfing skills, and paddleboarding, sea kayaking and coasteering are all available. If you’d rather stick to dry land, meet up with the South West Coast Path in Rock. If kids are with you, Camel Creek Family Adventure Park (25 minutes) is a good bet for a day on roundabouts and rollercoasters, or you can all have fun on the waterslides at Giant Slip and Slide Cornwall (20 minutes).

Powered grass caravan site (members only)

Liked Quiet field.

Disliked We booked this site as we had a restaurant reservation in Rock. It was advertised as a 20 minute walk into Rock, but took much longer. The road from the campsite is fast, narrow and according to locals considered dangerous to walk along. In my opinion this site is only suitable for people who are able to leave the site by car.
We were advised by the owner that we could park anywhere on the site, but when we arrived we had been allocated a pitch which was sloping and even using our ramps we couldn’t level our van. Also the chemical waste is located in a copse outside the camping field. I had to ask a chap in a neighbouring caravan where it was.
