  • Glamping pods in the grounds of a well-established Cornish garden
  • A 20-minute drive to Whitsand Bay and Plymouth; 35 minutes to Polperro
  • Wildlife haven; beauty treatments and massages in the garden spa
If you’re chasing a peaceful and adults-only Cornish getaway with comfy beds, homemade furnishings and plenty of room to sit and relax in spectacular gardens, The Greenhouse Spa Retreat could be just the place for you. Accommodation pods are tucked away amid colourful plantings, and chances are you’ll get to see deer, owls, buzzards and plenty of rabbits during your luxurious stay. The glampsite has lots of quiet corners with alfresco seating for admiring the garden – grown over 30 years from seed – and in the evenings you can cosy up around the up-cycled firepits for barbecues (or star-gazing on clear nights). Each unit comes with quality bedding, towels and all the basics you need for cooking in the outdoor kitchens. To source your food, head for Hatt (five minutes’ drive), where the local shop covers all the basics, while you’ll be visiting Saltash or Callington (both 10 minutes) for major shopping expeditions. There’s a shared washroom with shower, toilet and basin, adjacent to The Greenhouse Spa, where you can book bespoke beauty treatment and massages. Booking a stay at The Greenhouse Spa Retreat also includes pay-as-you-go membership of the local country club, which has a pool, gym, sauna, steam room and hot tub (15 minutes’ drive).

Local attractions

Although the thought of snoozing gently in the stunning gardens is very appealing, you may want to get out and explore something of Cornwall. If the beach beckons, Tregantle Beach in sweeping Whitsand Bay (20 minutes’ drive) is a sheltered beach with fine sand, while East Looe Beach (half an hour) is backed by a pretty fishing harbour and lots of waterside pubs. Polperro (35 minutes) is an equally enchanting seaside village with a quiet, pocket-sized beach. Head to Cornwall’s “ocean city” of Plymouth (20 minutes) for a wander around the National Marine Aquarium, or tour Plymouth Gin Distillery and enjoy a couple of tastings of the finished product. Other urban treats include Tavistock (25 minutes) for its Pannier Market (open Tuesday to Saturday), Lostwithiel (35 minutes) for all its antique shops, and waterside Fowey (50 minutes) for kayaking on the Tamar estuary. If you’re keen to see more amazing gardens, The Eden Project (45 minutes) makes an interesting day out for meanderings around its tropical rainforest habitats and 30 acres of plantings scattered with sculptures. At National Trust-owned Buckland Abbey (35 minutes), you can tour the former home of seafarer Sir Francis Drake, as well as the medieval abbey and formal Elizabethan gardens.
