  • Secluded four-acre site in a quiet valley by the hamlet of Comford
  • Central spot between Truro and St Ives; 15 minutes from each
  • Laidback dog-friendly site; village pub within walking distance
To Cornwall’s north coast for the day, or the south coast? Both are equally easy from Penndra Campsite, in a rural spot 10 minutes’ drive from Redruth – it’s roughly halfway between the two coastlines, so you can drive to either in a matter of 15-20 minutes or so. In fact, this secluded four-acre site just outside the hamlet of Comford is in a most handy position for getting out to all sorts of Cornwall attractions including Trebah Gardens, Land’s End, the Eden Project, Newquay Zoo and the Minack Theatre. Wherever you roam by day, later on you can come back to this small family-run site to relax and recharge your batteries ready to head out again the following morning. Dogs, kids and groups are all welcome here, as are barbecues and campfires (in the designated areas only, please). Facilities include a washing-up area, unisex portable toilets, a designated ladies’ toilet and a unisex hot-water shower. If you’re planning a barbecue, pick up bits from the village shops in Lanner or Ponsanooth (five minutes’ drive) or supermarkets in Redruth. Alternatively, head into Comford for a meal and a couple of Cornish ales at the local pub, which welcomes dogs and has a Roskillys ice cream parlour for a sweet treat too.

Liked: You must stay here! The owner is extremely welcoming and helpful and facilities are great. As a solo camper with just me and my dog he was extremely helpful in finding places for me and my pup to explore and always greeted you with a wave and a smiley face. Facilities were very clean and the showers were warm and had wide attachments so you can have a good soak after a long day of excursions. There's a nifty little cabin that houses communal fridge, freezer and charging ports and even a camper trading shelf that had all you camping nesecities. The cost of the pitch is very reasonable for what you get. 100% returning for our trip next year.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Penndra Campsite was a fantastic choice for our recent family vacation. We stayed for five days with our two boys (8 and 11) and our small dog, and we had a wonderful time. The campsite itself was incredibly clean and well-maintained. The shower cabin was spacious, clean, and had a great hot water. The dishwashing facilities were also clean and convenient, and the toilets were spotless. We were never afraid to use any of the amenities. Soap and toilet paper were always available, which is a big plus. We really enjoyed the fire places with benches, but we also appreciated the option to use our own BBQ or fire pit next to our tent. The slabs provided made it easy to set up our fire pit. Even though we had a non-electric pitch, we were able to charge our phones and power banks without any issues thanks to the small shed with the fridge, separate freezer, and charging points. The honesty shop on site had everything we needed, which was very convenient. Overall, we would highly recommend Penndra Campsite to anyone looking for a family-friendly camping experience. The facilities were excellent, the campsite was clean and well-maintained, and there was plenty to do for everyone.

Local attractions

So, to those coastlines… Cornwall’s north and south coasts are both full of gorgeous places to visit, so it’s worth making time for both. On the northern side, start with the beaches at Porthtowan (15 minutes) or Portreath (20 minutes), then head to the stunning sands of Gwithian (25 minutes). The excellent town of St Ives (half an hour) should be on the schedule too, for its mix of coast views and top-notch art galleries. Heading south instead, stop off at Pendennis Castle (20 minutes) and Trebah Garden (20 minutes) en route to the sands at Maenporth beach (15 minutes). Venture a little further and you’ll hit the spectacular Lizard Peninsula with a drive of about 40 minutes or so. For more of Cornwall’s top days out, look at Newquay Zoo (25 minutes), the Cornish Seal Sanctuary (25 minutes), Eden Project (45 minutes) and Land’s End (50 minutes).
