Family camping fun

  • Family-friendly Cornish holiday park on Trevose Head
  • A 15 minute-drive from Padstow and half an hour from Newquay
  • Sandy beaches nearby: Harlyn Bay and Constantine Bay 20 minutes' walk
With its lighthouse, coastal vistas and fab beaches, Trevose Head is something like the Cornish coast in miniature. If you're looking for seaside capers with your nearest and dearest, Harlyn Sands could well be the place. The site is family-run and works hard to be a welcoming spot for you and your tribe. Younger kids are well served here, as there's a play area, TV and games rooms and kids' club to keep them happily occupied. In the evening, there are special events for all to enjoy (and a bar is on hand for mums and dads who fancy a nightcap after the show). Harlyn Sands is also a handy kind of place: wifi is available on site so you can keep in touch with the folk at home, and there's a food shop should you need to stock up on essentials. Barbecues are allowed for alfresco dining, but takeaway options are also available if you'd rather skip the cooking. If you need a supermarket, take a 15-minute drive down the road to Padstow. The site makes no secret of the fact that it caters mostly to families (furry friends included), so teens need to be mindful that they don't stay out too late or disturb the peace.

Liked: The close proximity to a lovely beach and that they allowed dogs.

Disliked: The pitches were too small making the campsite overcrowded. The toilets need upgrading. The showers were terrible. They were just about warm enough and you had to run around under the shower to get wet! They really need to invest in a couple more shower/toilet blocks for the size of the campsite. 10 showers isn't enough. I understand that you make people pay so they don't stay in the shower too long, but I think they should be free. Decent showers with a push button would be much better. People soon get bored with continually pushing the button, so don't hang around in them too long. The pitch wasn't cheap, so paying for showers on top (I know it's nominal, but even so...) seems unfair. We had noisy neighbours who were thoroughly enjoying their first night and kept me awake until 3.30am. I'm not a killjoy and don't begrudge people enjoying themselves, but I know other campsites police late night noise and speak to campers accordingly. The fish and chips were terrible - soggy and tasteless. One of your staff members was having a bad day and swore at a customer. However, she did send someone to apologise as she wasn't feeling well.

Liked: We had requested a pitch in the large open field which was great. I can absolutely say that I would not of liked to have been in the main site. It was very very Impact. The on-site shop is great and the pool is great for the kids . Staff are very nice and helpful. It is literally a two minute walk to the beach

Disliked: I think to have to pay £5 per go per person in the pool is a bit much luckily I only have one child but my friend had three so it was quite pricey as they wanted to go in every day

Liked: Beachfields has great views. Close to beach access. Friendly staff.

Disliked: When paying £55 a night just to be in a field, you expect there to be toilets closeby and showers free of charge. Club House and arcades area seemed very outdated.

Local attractions

Folk in search of some beach time have come to the right spot, as Harlyn Bay and Constantine Bay can both be reached within 20 minutes on foot. Guarded by the RNLI between May and September, these splendid stretches of sand are hubs for snorklers and swimmers, and each has its own surf school - mighty handy if you want to learn to board in a safe environment. Padstow (15 minutes' drive) is a fishing town that's quite a draw for foodies seeking fresh, locally sourced products. Whether you fancy good old fish and chips or Michelin-starred dining, you can be pretty sure you'll find it here. Newquay, a major surf resort, is half an hour away. As well as the seafront, head here for buccaneering adventures at Pirate's Quest activity centre, or get up close and personal with marine life at the Blue Reef Aquarium. Just up the coast from Newquay (40 minutes from base) is Healeys Cornish Cyder Farm, home to both fine scrumpy and cute cuddly farm animals. The South Cornwall coast is also within easy reach: drive 40 minutes down through the countryside if you fancy a trip to the Eden Project or St Austell.
