  • Direct access to the golden sands, surf and fun park of Holywell Bay
  • Pool with huge waterslide
  • Nature trail, restaurant, adventure playgrounds and indoor soft play
Legend has it that mothers used to visit Holywell Bay to bathe their ailing children in the healing waters of the sacred spring hidden in the rocks, but whether or not you believe in ancient myths, you’ll most likely find a stay here restorative. It’s one of the best beaches in Cornwall, with jawdropping views, golden sands, good surf, and rockpools that make for perfect paddling – and lucky guests at Holywell Bay Holiday Park have direct access down a short path through the rolling dunes. Holywell Bay Holiday Park offers great facilities for its size: a whopping 300-foot waterslide for a screamworthy splashdown into the heated outdoor pool (open from May to mid-September); a toddlers’ pool; all-weather sports courts; adventure playgrounds for different ages; and an indoor soft play area. Pint-sized campers will be enthralled by the Starland Krew, who lead the lively kids’ club activities for tots to 10 year olds. Have a wander along the nature trails to make the most of the spectacular surrounds, then reward yourself with a Costa coffee on the outdoor terrace of the Ellenglaze Bar and Grill, which dishes up a range of grub to suit all tastes. Singers, magicians, stand-up comedians and quizzes will keep the whole family entertained during the evenings.

Liked The only real positives about Holywell Bay Holiday Park were the peaceful camping area and the great location, just a short walk from the beautiful Holywell Bay beach. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience left a lot to be desired.

Disliked The toilet and shower facilities were filthy, and the staff were far from welcoming - bordering on unfriendly, which made us feel more like we were in a prison camp than on a holiday. The clubhouse was extremely run-down, reminding me more of a council estate social club than a family-friendly environment. I certainly didn’t feel it was suitable for children, especially not for those with additional needs.

My son is autistic, and going on holiday is always a challenge for us. His scooter really helps encourage him to explore and engage with new places. We were respectful and carried it into the clubhouse, tucking it out of the way next to our table (in between the chair and the wall) while we ordered food. Unfortunately, the layout of the clubhouse meant we were getting constantly bumped into by people queuing for the shop, so we moved tables – only to find that my son’s scooter had disappeared. This caused him a great deal of distress.

We rushed to ask staff, and discovered that the security had moved it without saying anything to us – apparently because their manager thought he might trip over it. Not only did they take it without permission, but when I asked them to keep an eye on it now that it was outside, they refused and said it wasn’t their responsibility. In my view, once they moved it without consulting me, it became their responsibility.

As a single parent, the situation quickly became unmanageable. My son was too upset to return to the clubhouse, and we ended up abandoning our food and drinks – which had cost us nearly £35. The whole situation completely ruined our stay and highlighted how poorly equipped this site is for families with additional needs.

The electric hook-up on my pitch didn’t work. I spent a long time trying to sort it myself, but with no success. To make matters worse, there was no mobile signal on-site to call for help or assistance.
There is also no internet or WiFi signal available on the campsite.

Thankfully, I had only booked one night. We left and continued our trip at Perran Sands, which had a completely different atmosphere and helped salvage the rest of our weekend.

I would not recommend Holywell Bay Holiday Park – especially not to families or anyone looking for a welcoming, well-maintained, and respectful environment.

Will not be returning or recommending.

Liked Unfortunately not much

Disliked Lack of cleanliness and general disrepair of facilities. Toilets and showers were disgusting. Pool life attendants spent whole time messing around with hose and being pushed into the pool. No life attendant on top of slide leaving kids to crash down onto others at bottom. Freezing cold despite being advertised as heated. Perhaps this was due to cold water hose being sprayed in and cold water thrown in bucket fulls by the 3 attendants. Poor food and service in venue, lack of staff on duty. Only positive was we were only there one night.

Liked Proximity to the beach

Disliked Shower and toilet block were tatty, and not kept very clean. Dead flys around wash basins and dirty floors even in the shower. So as soon as you step away from the shower to dry off, your feet will get muddy again.

Recommend for a couple. Not much for children to do

Local attractions

There’s a small fun park in Holywell Bay itself, with bumper boats, karting and the like, plus an 18-hole pitch and putt course. A short drive inland will bring you to the popular Dairyland Farm World, which also has good indoor facilities for rainy days, and the Lappa Valley Steam Railway, where three miniature railway lines wend their way through pretty parkland. Seven miles along the coast from Holywell Bay Holiday Park is Newquay: not just for surfers, it’s stuffed with fun things to do for the whole family, including a good zoo and aquarium. Otherwise, you’re well placed to explore some of Cornwall’s top attractions, such as Tintagel Castle, the Crealy Great Adventure Park, the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan. For souvenirs that are guaranteed to go down well with the folk back home, try Healey’s Cornish Cyder Farm, where you can take a tractor ride through the beautiful orchards before stocking up on scrumpy, jam and other goodies in the farm shop.
