  • Dog-friendly wildlife haven near the Devon and Cornwall border
  • A 10-minute drive from Trethorne Leisure Park; 35 minutes to the beach
  • Close to coarse fishing, game fishing and riverside walks
Plop yourself down on the Devon and Cornwall border at Tripark. The six-acre wildlife haven was once part of the local estate but now belongs to a farm with plentiful rural scenery. Less than 10 minutes' drive from the A30, it’s well-linked to a host of Devon and Cornwall attractions, including Bude and Crackington beach 35 minutes’ drive away and Trethorne Leisure Park 10 minutes away. The site is in a quiet, level-grounded spot alongside a by-lane and close to the Ottery and Tamar rivers. That means that you’ll be able to get stuck into coarse fishing or river game fishing within a minute's walk (there’s an extra charge for fishing), get out on a riverside walk or find kayaking activities within driving distance of the site. Sunsets and sunrises are quite a treat here. Part of a sheltered valley, the site looks towards Dartmoor too – and it’s not uncommon to spot birds of prey on or around the site. There’s no electricity or mains water, so it’s set up for wild camping with parking on the well-kept grassy pitches, 144 square metres of roof cover, firepits available and cattle and sheep grazing nearby. There’s road and by-lane access here, so it’s easy to get into the lovely Launceston five minutes’ drive away, a local historic market town with a supermarket for all your food essentials. There are bigger shopping centres in Plymouth and Exeter, both 50 minutes’ drive away. Closer by, there’s a popular garden centre about half a mile away with a café, butcher and food hall where you can stock up on all manner of local produce. It’s also a five-minute drive to Launceston Castle, an equestrian centre and a golf course.

Route directions

Once you've passed Homeleigh Garden Centre, continue for half a mile and go through the hamlet of Dutson, then take the first left onto a classified road. Travel 200 metres along that classified road and look for a gateway with a shed; the site is through that gateway. You are welcome to pitch anywhere in that six-acre field.

Local attractions

Lots of exploring is in the line-up, that’s for sure. Perhaps some pony rides or bumper cars to kick things off at Trethorne Leisure Park (10 minutes’ drive)? Muddling through the maze at Hidden Valley (15 minutes)? Couple those family-friendly attractions with a surfing session in Bude (35 minutes) or on Crackington beach (35 minutes) and you might be feeling like a nap soon enough. That precious shuteye will come in handy for the other outdoor activities across Devon and Cornwall. Circle Roadford Lake (15 minutes) on foot, bicycle or a watersports vessel of your choosing. Tamar Valley (half an hour) is another top spot for watersports like canoeing surrounded by green slopes. To round things off, the gorgeous Tintagel Castle (40 minutes) is just the spot for scenery and history wrapped into one outing. The clifftop castle has views over the wild coast, and its stories are just as wild – they include Arthurian legends.
