  • A country escape 30 minutes’ walk from the centre of Bodmin
  • A 20-minute drive from the Eden Project; 35 mins from Truro
  • Individual luxury shower rooms; on-site shop and bakery
Cornwall may be famed for its savoury pasties, but you can expect an altogether sweeter treat when you stay at Orchard Springs Campsite. The two-acre site is on the outskirts of the town of Bodmin, but green fields and an orchard and stream give it a country escape feel. The centre of Bodmin is less than two miles from Orchard Springs, and Bodmin Jail, Cornwall’s Regimental Museum, the Bodmin Town Museum and Bodmin’s Obelisk are all within 35 minutes’ walk of the site. Bodmin also has plenty of shops, pubs and restaurants where you can pick up souvenirs and supplies, scull some local brews or have a taste of Cornish cuisine. If you’re not feeling up to the trip into Bodmin, an on-site shop in the reception hut has the basics you’ll need, as well as some Orchard Springs home-baked bread and pastries. A campers’ kitchen with microwave, fridge freezer and ice blocks is also available for guests’ use. A toilet block built by local craftspeople rounds out facilities, with individual shower rooms giving you a little extra privacy during your stay. Orchard Springs Campsite opened in 2018: its owners spent the 10 years before that running another successful site in the region.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: We had an amazing stay at the Shepperd's Hut, absolutely loved the experience and it had everything you need. We could have turned up with an empty car and would have been very comfortable. Just bring your own towels. The hut comes with a fully lined bed, a kitchen counter with an electric hob, a small dining table, all the cutlery, a kettle, a coffee press, even a decent wi-fi. Outside you have a portable firepit and a small bbq (we used it to hold our disposable bbq above ground). You are 10m away from the toilets which is very handy for late at night. This camp has very good showers and the water is hot 24h which was very convenient for us as we tend to come back to camp very late after a whole day exploring Cornwall. The hosts also offer fresh bakery in the mornings that you can pre-order, we tried the croissants, the sausage rolls and the steak pasty. All delicious and so convenient if you can't be bothered to do any cooking in the mornings. The campsite is beautifully maintained and just the right size for everything to feel very close no matter where on the camp you stay. We will definitely come back again.

Disliked: Nothing, 10/10 stay

Liked: Lovely little site in good location with friendly hosts. Facilities are clean, loved that the toilets/showers are like en suite rooms rather than cubicles and shower blocks. There are only a few though so did have to queue at times. Level, roomy pitches. Nice option to order morning pastries. Pizza night was good. Mostly quiet. Would recommend and would stay again.

Disliked: Several young boys constantly kicking footballs at and into our tent and near misses kicking towards people when walking past. More an issue of parenting than the site but maybe some rules about ball games would be beneficial.

Liked: Lovely, well maintained campsite. Great location for visiting around Cornwall as it’s in the middle of everywhere. Facilities on site are great and the added extras of fresh bakery items available in the morning! Owners very helpful if you have any questions.

Liked: Super toilet/shower block/washing up facilities - clean & well provisioned. A good sheltered/wind protected site. Option to buy a small selection of baked-to-order pastries/bread 🥖 🥐 in the morning for breakfast. Thursday cooked-on-site Pizza-oven Night. Very well-maintained. Site was probably 70% occupied whilst we were there so had no issues with availability of toilets/showers.

Disliked: Nothing. One of the best sites in my 10+ year camping experience.

Liked: The campsite and owners were excellent! We had only booked to stay for 2 days and were gutted we only got to stay there for such a short amount of time. It’s a lovely, small campsite which is perfect for us as we hate the chaos of the traditional big campsites that cater for masses. On arrival we were greeted by one of the lovely owners and she allowed us to choose the pitch we wanted - a lovely pitch, right next to some woodland area with a stream at the bottom. The facilities were amazing- wonderfully clean showers and toilets, clean kitchen with fridge/freezer, free Wi-Fi and “to order” pastries in the morning! Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a nice clean, calm campsite ☺️

Disliked: Literally nothing to dislike!

Liked: Lovely little accessible campsite on outskirts of Bodmin. Nice clean shower, toilet and wash up facilities, sufficient for size of site. Local supermarkets close enough for shopping. Great homemade pizzas on Thursday evenings (Aug).

Disliked: Pitches were sufficient, could have been slightly bigger for tent and car......

Liked: Fabulous site with clean working amenities. The pizza on the Thursday night was one of the best meals we had all week. Great location for getting round central Cornwall and would definitely recommend a visit to Bodmin Jail whilst you are there.

Local attractions

Fans of the BBC’s Poldark will recognise some of the place names in the area around Orchard Springs: the towns of Bodmin and Truro are close by, with Bodmin a short walk from the site and Truro a 35-minute drive. Poldark is synonymous with lingering shots of the Cornish moors, and tours can take you to some of the coves and mines that bring the show to life. This area of Cornwall has a lot more to it than filming locations. The Eden Project, a 20-minute drive away, is a top spot to get up close with nature in the outdoor gardens and tropical and Mediterranean biomes or, if you’re feeling brave, have a go on England’s longest zipwire. The Eden Project looks to the future, but if you’d prefer to dig around in the past there are plenty of historic sites close by. Get a feel for Victorian life at Lanhydrock House and Gardens, a 15-minute drive from Orchard Springs; a look at the Elizabethan era at Prideaux Place, 30 minutes away, or head back to Georgian times at Pencarrow, 10 minutes from the site. If the zip wire at the Eden Project got you geared up for a more active break, you can cycle or walk the Camel Trail – which passes through Bodmin on its way towards the fishing port of Padstow on the northern Cornish coast – or take to the seas at one of the highly-rated surfing beaches nearby.
