  • Simple South Downs campsite a mile from the village of Compton
  • A 20-minute drive to Emsworth; Bognor Regis half an hour
  • Natural-style grass tent pitches; well-behaved dogs welcome
Got high hopes of making an escape to the peace and quiet of the South Downs? Such a break is easily sorted at Hundred Acres Camping Field, a frill-free, rural site a mile outside the small village of Compton. This site's pictures speak for themselves – here you can expect big skies, clear country views and plenty of space. Part of the large pitching field is on a gentle slope, meaning this site only caters to tents (you're still fine to park up by your plot, though). Basics like a portable toilet are provided, but this is the kind of place where you'll do best if you come prepared. A torch for getting around at night wouldn't go amiss, and camping basics like a map, walking boots and a cool box will all help make your stay here that little bit more comfortable (not to mention facilitating spontaneous South Downs rambles and picnics). This back to basics choice is in a prime position for launching excursions out to lots of wildlife spots, including Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which is around 20 minutes away by road. For coastal trips that include swimming and spending time on the beach you have easy access to Bognor Regis (half an hour). When the latter spot is busy (as it tends to be during the peak of the summer), quieter destinations like Aldwick beach (30 minutes) or Bracklesham Bay (35 minutes) could be a better bet.

Local attractions

If you find yourself making your way towards the coast, make a point of stopping off in the pretty port town of Emsworth (20 minutes' drive), where a well-preserved centre with a square, mill pond and marina make for a most pleasant day out. If you're feeling energetic, you could also make it the start and end point of a nine-mile circular walk around Thorney Island, a little-known nature reserve. Heading east from base, you'll reach West Dean Gardens (15 minutes), a botanical site that may well be the horticultural highlight of your trip. Once you've sauntered around the pergola, walled garden and Victorian glasshouses it's onwards to Goodwood Racecourse (20 minutes), where all manner of fixtures are held throughout the year. If big-city lights are calling, set off for Portsmouth Historic Dockyard (35 minutes), an open-air museum with three exceptional ships on display (including Tudor flagship The Mary Rose). You might also like to bring your binoculars and set sail on a 40-minute harbour tour to take in a wider range of vessels.
