  • Quiet West Sussex wild camping site near the village of East Dean
  • A 15-minute drive to main Goodwood Estate; Chichester 25 minutes
  • In the South Downs National Park, with access to South Downs Way
Setting off for strolls in the South Downs National Park is splendidly easy from Newhouse Farm Wild Camping. This quiet off-grid site is part of the Goodwood Estate, and it has footpaths running directly from the farm to the South Downs Way and other parts of the network of trails that run through this scenic part of the world. The farm makes a lovely place for a peaceful rural break in the West Sussex countryside. The pitches are spread around the perimeter of a large field; access is up a hill, along a rural gravel track which is a little bumpy in places. There are gorgeous views of the national park landscapes all around, and clusters of trees on site giving a home to local wildlife. It's a wild camping-style setup here, but you’ll have access to toilets (although please note no showers or hot water). Dogs and kids are welcome, and campfires and barbecues are permitted to help you cook and keep warm by night. And you may well need that warmth, as you’re likely to want to sit out for as long as possible, looking up at the starry displays in this International Dark Sky Reserve. The main Goodwood site is about 10 to 15 minutes' drive away, so this is a handy place to stay if you're heading to an event there. Closer to home is the village of East Dean, just under two miles away, which has a good food pub.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: Beautiful setting, spacious pitches, lovely views, very friendly owner, Rachel, came round to say hello and check if all OK, offered logs, firepit etc. Clean toilets (portaloos). Could bring your own firepit as long as its off the ground. Site was fully booked but did not seem crowded as there is a lovely area of long meadow grass in the centre of the field. Location ideal for South Downs, Goodwood, Halnaker and Boxgrove all within a short drive.

Disliked: Nothing really, although the field was slightly sloping so levelling blocks would be useful. Access is bumpy, but fine if you take it slow.

Liked: Area. Great views. Great location. Host Rachel was lovely and helpful. Came away feeling very relaxed. There are two toilet areas available which is great. There is minimal signal/4G which I liked as it gave me a better experience. Please be aware of the long dirt track you have to drive along to get to the field.

Disliked: Unfortunately, we stayed when there was a festival in the next field so was very loud until 11pm. Could also do with a shower block or two but it is wild camping.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: It’s a wonderful site, with great views. I liked that you can have a fire pit and just relax in the peace and quiet, if you want there is a great pub in the village. Rachel the owner is brilliant, really helpful and friendly.

Disliked: Only slight negative is the track is a bit bumpy in places, but it is a farm track so I guess it isn’t going to be perfect.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: Very nice secluded site off the main road. Lovely walks easily accessible from the site. The centre of the field had been left to meadow so there was lots of wildlife activity.

Disliked: The approach up the extremely bumpy chalk lane was as described so be aware. Although the toilets were kept very clean there was no hand washing facilities. There are rules in place about noise at night but no-one to enforce them so Saturday night was noisy.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked: Have been coming to New House Farm campsite for many years as offers a much 'wilder' camping experience than anywhere else in the region in a beautiful and peaceful setting. Management has recently changed, and Rachel, who runs the site now, was very welcoming and very helpful. It is still by far the cheapest site I know of in the South East. Highly recommended for those who want a natural camping experience (facilities are limited: there is water and toilets, and fire pits can be hired)

Disliked: Nothing

Liked: The field was beautiful, large, quiet and definitely off grid. The long track approach was fun to drive or walk down to the pub. The host, Rachel was among the kindest I have experienced, she sourced us gas canisters and provided wood for our fire pit.

Disliked: Nothing.
