  • Prettily landscaped park within easy reach of major travel hubs
  • A mile from shops, pubs, restaurants and takeaways at Lingfield
  • Communal firepit in the centre of the site for guests' use
Woof. That’s your dog telling you to book a long, long Lingfield stay: the pitches at family-run Long Acres Caravan and Camping Park are perfectly pet-friendly (though there is a small extra fee for man’s best friend) – and there are lots of options for walkies in the surrounding Surrey countryside too. Whether using Long Acres to be walked by the dog or as a base to see the attractions of Surrey, human campers are also in for a treat at this friendly well-maintained park: there’s a well-stocked tourist information kiosk, firepits to hire, and three spotless centrally heated toilet and shower blocks. For food, Lingfield village – with its shops, pubs, restaurants, takeaways and supermarkets – is a mile away. There's a communal firepit in the centre of the site available for everyone to use: wood can be bought for a small charge.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: The lovely staff member who called to work out our check in as reception was about to close - really polite and informative, The hay field set up.

Disliked: Having to pay 50p for a shower, The other noisy campers with kids playing and shouting til 10pm, The sounds of the planes from Gatwick which we found very intrusive. Not a good location for a campsite.

Liked: Friendly helpful staff The Meadow would have been a very pleasant part of the site to enjoy the tranquil scenery had it not been for all the rain which made it impossible to use at the time we were there. There were very good, if expensive, laundry facilities.

Disliked: The 'new' shower block looked wonderful with large cubicles containing rain shower, toilet and hand washbasin and plenty of space. However, on two occasions the 50p was rejected (very annoying when undressed ready to get in the shower), on another occasion the water was completely cold and on a third occasion there was no water at all. Finally, we used one of the older blocks. We were not told on arrival that the gate closes at 7pm. When we returned one evening at 1030, we were dismayed to find it closed

Liked: The site is conveniently based near London we used it to break a journey from Wales. The facilities were excellent, the pitches were well laid out with all facilities we needed and the staff helpful. TV reception was good.

Disliked: The site is on a flight path to Gatwick airport and planes constantly flew low overhead and were quite disturbing for sleeping. Some may find this not a problem but we are used to living in rural Wales with little noise.

Liked: We really enjoyed staying here, just walking and playing outdoors with our grandsons and Bess the dog! The weather was changeable but mostly dry except at night- it poured for 3 nights! That can’t be helped , just get old clothes and wellies on! The aeroplanes were very noisy but we got used to them very quickly. The toilet and showers were clean although the bins could have done with being emptied. The laundry was very handy, it would have been perfect if they had sold some detergent. In all we’ve had a very healthy, happy few nights at Long Acres, thank you to the very friendly staff!

Disliked: Just needed to sell detergent and empty the toilet/ bathroom bins a little more often please!

Local attractions

Don’t lose your head with the huge range of historical highlights in the area, starting with 13th-century Hever Castle (15 minutes' drive), the childhood home of Anne Boleyn (boo to Henry Eighth) and with award-winning gardens, water maze with a mind of its own and what will probably be the fave of the kids – a 13th-century gatehouse with historical instruments of execution and torture. Standen (15 minutes), a National Trust property at nearby East Grinstead, has a hillside setting around an arts and crafts house with work by William Morris. Gardens more your thing? Wander around the world woodlands at Wakehurst (20 minutes), managed by the Royal Gardens at Kew and the setting for much of Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of As You Like It, or take a look at Wisley (35 minutes), the flagship garden of the Royal Horticultural Society. Horses? You’ll like Lingfield Park Racecourse, one of only five all-weather racecourses in the country, with race meetings all year round. Or how about other types of beasties – Surrey is stuffed with animal parks, wildlife centres and farms: Lingfield’s British Wildlife Centre (five minutes) with 40 native species, Farnham’s Birdworld (an hour) and the farm park Hobbledown (35 minutes) for starters – or the zoo and Sea Life Centre at Chessington World of Adventures (35 minutes). Not that a visit to the racecourse coincides with this, but if you’re looking for free things to do around Long Acres and in Surrey, again the area is stuffed with options including walks among the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and chalky North Downs, drooling with envy at Mercedes Benz World or learning about Lewis Carroll at Guildford Museum.
