  • Spacious pitches at a 260-acre Surrey estate near Cranleigh
  • A 15-minute drive to Winkworth Arboretum; 40 minutes to the coast
  • Fishing and social club on site; profits support local charity
A holiday for yourselves, and you get to do good for others at the same time? It’s a win-win situation when you stay at Springbok Campsite, part of a secluded estate on the border of Surrey and West Sussex. The estate is run as a charity that provides accommodation and support for former seafarers, and any profits made by the campsite will be fed back into providing services for the residents. Concerned you may have to sacrifice certain facilities in order to support this worthy cause? Not a bit of it – this is a lovely site that’s part of a 260-acre estate made up of farmland, forest and formal gardens. You’ll be able to take walks around at your leisure, perhaps stopping in at the pretty walled garden or picking up a day pass for some fishing on the one-acre lake. Dog-friendly pitches here are spacious and fuss-free, and have access to basic shower and toilet facilities, plus a camp kitchen/washing-up shack. Guests are also welcome to stop in for a drink at the on-site social club. Barbecue evenings at your pitch are permitted too, if you’d like – there are shops 10 minutes’ drive away in Cranleigh for all the bits you’ll need. (Please note that barbecues must be raised off the ground and disposed of responsibly once they have cooled down.) If a country walk and pub are musts on your rural break, you’ll be pleased to hear that both are on hand – in fact, you could combine both with a stroll to one of the hostelries within a 30/45-minute walk. For other outings nearby you’ll have a choice of heading north to the Surrey Hills, west to the South Downs National Park or south to the coast (about 40 minutes away).

Liked: Great site that is generally quiet apart from the planes from Gatwick. Loved the shower shacks some of the best showers we have had on a campsite. Nice big pitches with plenty of space. Staff were friendly but very much generally left guests to their own devices. Loved walking around the estate as well around the gardens.

Disliked: Nothing

Liked: Nice site, the grey showers were great! Nice area to walk around.

Disliked: Unfortunately it seems that some Sunday morning s they have pre arranged clay shooting, which is on part of the estate. This is very noisy and stressful and goes on for three 3hrs. Definitely won’t be coming on Sunday s again. This should have been clearly mentioned before hand, small children and dogs might be very sensitive to the noise.

From the manager: Thank you very much for your comments and lovely photos. We are glad you enjoyed the site walks and amenities. The Clay Pigeon shooting is held fortnightly, and is noted on the welcome email. My apologises to you though. Best wishes, the Springbok Estate.

Would definitely return.

Liked: Well set out pitches, clean toilets, access to the social club, nice fishing lake, friendly residents / locals, basic but nice facilities. We had a lovely couple of nights here. A very pretty site.

Disliked: Other visitors - a large group arrived on our second day and basically took up every free area, even though they had only booked 5 pitches. Someone else turned up, who had booked, and ended up having to ask part of the group to move as they had taken up every pitch and grass space! Didn’t affect us luckily but there were a few hours of chaos and feeling like they had taken over! Not the site’s fault but difficult as there are no staff available to check with. Noisy / busy on Sunday morning when the shooting party arrived. Traffic driving through the estate over the weekend can travel at speed so be careful with small children.

Liked: Spacious pitches, lovely surroundings, clean washrooms. Great to be able to support such a worthwhile charity with all profits from Camping going into supporting the people they care for.

Disliked: Showers were nice and hot but not great for getting dressed as no where to hang your clothes or put shoes out of the way of the shower spray.

From the manager: Thank you so much for the 10/10 review. We are so pleased that you found our facilities and surroundings lovely. Yes,you are correct the funds go into the ex seafarers charity, estate and grounds. Noted, a dry area for a change of clothes. Best wishes, the Springbok Estate.

Liked: Being able to use the social bar at the 'Care Ashore' Home; sensible bar prices and a friendly welcome. The lady at the Glamping site next door was very helpful (NB; Her site is a separate, private enterprise, so her facilities are not available for Springbok Campsite guests). In the absence of a 'Reception' or anyone making contact - she gave us valuable advice re; walks and cycle rides along the Wey and Arun Canal.

Disliked: Toilets are a bit of a hike from the pitches - actually being behind the Glamping block, but perfectly adequate for a 'back-to-basics' facility (we loved the 'Shower Shacks'.

Liked: Lovely peaceful site, which sounds strange when you are under the flight path. Lots of dog walking opportunities from the site. Blackberry picking galore. The Merchant Seaman residents were very friendly if you came across them. Which you can do as they volunteer in the bar which we could use. You will need level up blocks as hardstanding is on a slope. Pitches were of a good size. We'll definitely be back!

From the manager: Naomi, thank you very much for the review. Yes we are very peaceful and scenic considering that we are very close to Gatwick Airport with their flightpath scheduling! We are pleased to hear that you socialised with the resident ex-seafarers, took walks and picked some blackberries from the estate. We do hope to see you again. Best wishes, the Springbok Team.

Liked: Nice clean site, level and spacious pitches. We came here on our maiden voyage in the camper, just to try it out. Quiet site, a few planes going over. They have a lake, but the weather was so bad we didn’t get to try out the fishing. Not much to do if you haven’t got a car. We tried to walk to nearest pub, around 20 mins away. Got there it was closed down. Nothing else around. You are walking on roads which have no paths, so unless driving or cycling you can be very isolated. They do have a bar which is open for the residents who live their and of the care home, so may not be what you’re expecting.

Disliked: Very poor mobile signal. No wifi unless at main house.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for reviewing your stay with us and we wish you many more trips in your camper. It's a shame it rained while you stayed and you didn't get to try out our fishing lake. Our Social Club bar is open to all and many of our residents love to chat with campers who are staying with us. Best wishes form all here at Springbok.

Local attractions

If you like a good garden visit on your break, you’ve come to the right spot – it won’t take long at all to reach the likes of the National Trust gardens at 121-acre Winkworth Arboretum (15 minutes’ drive) and Nymans (35 minutes), with woodlands, a lake and natural play areas. The colourful Ramster Gardens (15 minutes) and pretty Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens (35 minutes) are certainly worth adding to the list too. If you’ve brought the kids along, a trip to Fishers Farm Park (15 minutes) may well be on the cards for tractor rides, mini golf, treetop trails, pony rides and lots of animals to meet (plus indoor play areas in case of dodgy weather). You might also like to see the big birds at Surrey Hills Falconry (20 minutes) or hit the beach in Worthing (40 minutes). No kids in your party? A day at Denbies Wine Estate (35 minutes) might appeal instead then – you can sign up for tours and tastings here, and there’s a lovely restaurant too.
