  • Eco-friendly wild camping with spectacular views of the Weald of Kent
  • A 10-minute drive to Leeds Castle; 20 minutes to Sissinghurst Gardens
  • Dogs welcome, kids’ activities and hot showers on site; pubs nearby
Slow down and get into the wild-camping vibe at Wealdings, a 15-acre family-run campsite on a farm overlooking the gorgeous Weald of Kent. Handily located between Maidstone and Ashford, the camping fields promise a heady mix of fresh air, grassy meadows, ponds, streams and woodlands to relax in… a place for families to unplug and simultaneously recharge. The owners run the site with the ethos of ‘recycle and leave no trace’, and from the pitches to the facilities, minimal plastic has been used, with wood and metal utilised wherever possible. And those eco-credentials are upped even further as all food waste is recycled, along with your plastic, glass and metal waste too. All electricity comes from solar power, and you can chill under a hot shower with decent water pressure after a long day of outdoor fun – while compost loos are tucked into a quiet corner of the camping field. Designed for your security, the site has a self-locking entrance and a car park close to the pitches (there's also another tarmac car park for overflow parking, or cars unable to go down the farm track). No cars on the fields, please, but the owners do offer a quad-bike trailer service to get all your things on and off site – you can all jump on board too. Kids – and the dogs – are welcome to roam wild, and activities are laid for them like pond dipping, hay-bale jumping and archery bales (all free of charge), as well as hammocks, swings and dens to go native in. Firepits are provided so you can fire up a barbecue – but if cooking is off the agenda, there are plenty of pubs within a 10-minute drive serving great grub – and even some fine dining too. Pick up bits and bobs in local farm shops in Pluckley and Charing (both within 15 minutes’ drive).

Liked: Unbelievable site! We wanted to stay much longer and regret not booking for more nights. Beautiful site, and the nicest owner with a huge can-do attitude. Free products, charging station and games for the children. So much to explore. Stunning surroundings. The shower was the best part for me, the hills were the most exciting for my children, and the morning view was my husband's favourite. We will be back again and again. We just need to not drive our very tall van down the hill- not an issue as there's a lovely space to park your car and Liz carries all your bits in her ATV. My daughter's Barbie and Ken had the best time being carted back to the van from the campsite. Enjoy your visit when you go!

Disliked: that we didn't book for many more nights.

Loved that we had our own space for kids & dog & that my dog was allowed off lead. Owner was lovely & very helpful! Our pitch was at the bottom of the hill, was level & huge area to ourselves. Liked: This is such a beautiful campsite. We had a great pitch with plenty of space and amazing views all around us. The fact there are limited pitches meant we felt like we had our own privacy and there were not long waits for the amenities. The toilets and shower were very clean and Liz (the host) was just lovely! She was there to give us a warm welcome and was happy to help throughout our stay. This is a real gem and we will definitely be going back!

Liked: Fantastic views over beautiful Kent countryside. Well spaced pitches, dotted about the site of a bronze age settlement. A really well organised site with loads of great ideas. The hot shower has great water pressure, easily the best shower I've had on a campsite The composting toilets are well thought through too. Liz is a really great host. Would definitely book again.

Liked: Absolutely beautiful setting overlooking working farmland, on great field with trees, ponds, and footpaths in easy reach. Liz who runs the site was absolutely excellent and so lovely. Ready to help with anything you might need. The pitches are level despite the field being quite steep and undulating in some parts. The site is very well spread out and not overcrowded with campers so it really can feel like you are wild camping but with the bonus of having well maintained toilets and facilities nearby. And a shower with better water pressure than ours at home! There’s pond dipping, archery and tug of war rope set up for free which kept the kids on site endlessly entertained (and us too). So much to explore and do even just in the campsite. Some great pubs and a fab roast at the pepper box in in walking distance. We loved it and so did our little dog who was very welcome too!

Disliked: Nothing! We will definitely be back!

Local attractions

You can embark on all sorts of walking and biking adventures from the site. Round-trip expeditions might take in Lenham Chalk Cross (10 minutes), Pluckley’s ruined old church or the remains of the medieval castle at Sutton Valence (both 15 minutes). History buffs, you can see you’re in the right place – and there’s plenty more. Tours of magnificent, moated Leeds Castle (10 minutes’ drive) will keep you enthralled for a day, while its medieval-themed adventure playground keeps the kids happy. At Dover Castle (45 minutes), you can walk medieval ramparts and learn about top-secret WWII missions in an underground exhibition, and you can mug up on naval history at The Historic Dockyard Chatham (45 minutes). For some light relief at the end of an action-packed day, perhaps you might like to sample the still and sparkling white wines at Brissenden Family Vineyard (10 minutes) or Westwell Wine Estate (15 minutes).
