  • Well-maintained, peaceful camping field near Littlebourne in Kent
  • Five minutes’ drive to Howletts Wild Animal Park; 15 to Canterbury
  • Off-grid site with showers; firepits for hire and kindling for sale
With a peaceful, rural setting near Littlebourne in Kent, Cooll Camping offers the best of two worlds – tranquillity at the pop-up camping field surrounded by mature trees, plus lots of historic sights, shops and pubs as it’s on the outskirts of lovely Canterbury. Communal facilities include a rain-shower shed and a washing-up sink, as well as shared firepit; you can also rent individual firepits and buy logs and kindling so you can grill up a barbecue outside your own tent if you’d rather not do too much mingling. Pick up meat for the grill at the convenient farm shop (five minutes’ drive). If you’d prefer to abandon cooking altogether, you’ll never be short of somewhere to eat and drink, as there are loads of pubs within 10-minutes’ drive. And don’t forget that this is wild camping with no electricity (although ice pack freezing is available to keep your foodie bits and bobs fresh). Bring a torch for getting around after dark. There are two pubs within walking distance of Cooll Camping, including a popular foodie pub with great family facilities only a short walk along the bridleway and a pub 15 minutes' walk away in the village.

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked Toilets and shower were very clean, water hot. Space was lovely and owners were really friendly without being overbearing and even came round offering marshmallows for those with firepits. We were given a useful list of things nearby (most importantly, the pubs!)

Disliked Very close to main road, not much can be done but it did impact the stay.

We came to Canterbury for a weekend of sightseeing and booked this…

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked We came to Canterbury for a weekend of sightseeing and booked this because of the handy location (only a 20ish minute drive to the city centre).
We came from about 4 hours away and had a dreadful drive meaning we were going to be quite late. We called up ahead, a bit worried about missing the check in curfew, but the hosts were so friendly and understanding.
Once there, they welcomed us and were so accommodating. They gave us a printed handout with loads of handy tips of things in the area, including things that are within walking distance from the campsite.
They even told us that they do the rounds in the evening and hand out marshmallows for anyone with a fire going.

The facilities were clean, with hot water in the shower.
There were sinks for washing up. A basketball hoop for the kids to have a little play.

The only thing I would say is that there was a real mix of people on the campsite- from families to groups of friends. Some of the other groups were playing music and up quite late. It really didn't bother us in the slightest because it made us feel we could relax and didn't have to worry about whispering ourselves, but I just thought it would be worth a mention for anyone who's after a quiet campsite. It was a very lovely atmosphere, very vibrant and friendly.

Very highly recommend, and will definitely be staying here again if we happen to visit Canterbury in the future!

Unpowered grass and earth tent or trailer tent site

Liked The owners are very friendly and had saved us a pitch next door to our family's glamping tent. The field is flat and you can pitch where you like.

Disliked The pitch where you like is a two edged sword. It means that for instance a large group had commandeered a large space almost blocking the access to the toilets. They also decided that the communal firepit was theirs.
The toilet block is totally inadequate for the whole site. There are two toilets and one shower for about 100 people. Many people were complaining about the lack of facilities. There were two washing up sinks one was not working and the one that was working had no hot water.
The washing up sinks were in the open no cover if it were raining!
The shower floor was filthy without it even when it wasn't raining.
The glamping tents were very stylish but not very well kitted out. They had no proper cooking facilities no gas stove and a frying pan to use on the firepit.
They have to share the inadequate facilities with the whole campsite.

Unpowered grass and earth caravan site

Liked Run by a wonderfully friendly and helpful lady. Very clean site. Toilets are clean but could do with more of them. Short walk to a lovely pub.

Disliked Toilet block was a little dark

From the manager: Thank you for the kind review, we do have more toilets planned, we do say bring a good torch in our listing as our lights are battery powered and sometimes do run out of power unexpectedly 🤷‍♀️
I hope you will visit us again it was lovely meet you guys.

Local attractions

Mmm, where to go and what to do first? If you’re with the kids, Howletts Wild Animal Park is well-worth setting a day aside to see the mountain gorillas and tigers in fairly natural and expansive settings. Wingham Wildlife Park (both five minutes’ drive) offers feeding sessions with parrots and lemurs, and at the Wildwood Trust (15 minutes) you can see wild boar, deer and bears. At Herne Bay (half an hour), families can have good, old-fashioned seaside fun on the pier and in the seaside arcades, or you can take seafront walks through Herne Bay Coastal Park (25 minutes). Energetic types will be happy splashing on the water at Canoe Wild - Fordwich (10 minutes), and anglers should head for Cottington Lakes Fishery (20 minutes) for a day chasing carp. Photogenic Canterbury (15 minutes) deserves your attention too, another big-hitter for families, with the historic cathedral to tour and half-timbered buildings lining cobbled streets packed with indie shops, old-world pubs and restaurants. Look out for the wonky lines of St John Boys House, now a celebrated bookshop.
