  • Spectacular sea and rural views a few miles from Yarmouth
  • Aqua park, farm park, target sports, bike hire and loads more
  • Comfy beds, hot showers, music, events and licensed restaurant
Sometimes, there are sites with such a stack of options, right on the grounds or within an easy amble, that you can bid goodbye to any notion of travelling via four wheels. Such is the setup at Tapnell Farm, a few miles from Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. The innovative owner has crafted an eco-friendly site on a traditional farm set in a sheltered woodland at Tapnell Farm, a family centre on the site of the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. Make first for Tapnell Farm Park, where there's the three-storey soft play area the Play Barn, a Straw Bale Play Zone and a giant jumping pillow. There are animals to meet, including farmyard animals, mischievous marsupials in the Wallaby Walkbout and alpacas, meerkats and miniature donkeys. Next up is the aqua park, with over 20 obstacles. There's an archery and axe-throwing centre on site, along with football golf (just golf without the clubs and clay pigeon shooting and air rifle shooting activities. A tad hungry? The Cow restaurant serves meat and veggie dishes, local ales, specialist coffees and teas, light bites and bar snacks throughout the day, all in a swishly converted Swiss barn overlooking spectacular Tennyson Down. Off the farm but within walking distance (or a short drive if you really must) are a good range of cafés, pubs, shops and farm shops, the sands of Freshwater Bay and Compton beach, and the West Wight Alpaca Farm. The Tapnell Trail has six miles of walking directly from the farm. By bike (hire one on site), Yarmouth and the Needles are both about half an hour away. The site has lush views of the sea and farmlands, as well as spectacular sunsets and stargazing in clear conditions. For supper, eat alfresco at the outdoor seating or picnic bench, as there's a shared pizza oven and barbecue facilities. Electric car-charging is available on site.

Liked: The kitchen facilities are great! Lots of available things like toasters kettle fridge with small freezer , oven, stove top, sink with sponges and tea towels.. great!

Disliked: The containers are stacked VERY close to each other so if your neighbour is loud all you can hear is that, so it doesn't give you a sense of peaceful camping experience. That plus the camping area is so close to the football area of the farm, it definitely wasn't peaceful. No open fires means the nights are cold. The mattresses are covered with a layer of plastic for protection but this means every time you roll over in the night you wake everyone else up. There's a Very small sheltered section outside the containers that fits 2 chairs if it's raining. Unfortunately our container had a leak in this area which meant our party of 3, only 1 person could sit outside in this area because this dripped constantly whilst it rained and when it wasn't due to the excess water collection. Not value for money and we won't be back... My neighbours in London are not as close as the containers on the camp. Glad we went camping to get away from people only to sit in a crowded camp site. Also the road to access in and out is not easy to drive on. If we did not have a big car this wouldnt have been easy to access. It asks to rate the wifi- there was no WiFi. There was barely any reception!

Local attractions

Tapnell Farm is a half hour bike ride or hour and a half's walk from Yarmouth, the handsome Isle of Wight harbour town in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Highlights include the splendid views across the Solent from its Grade II-listed pier with, a popular place to potter along or fish from; the 16th-century castle, and hikes around the Yar river estuary and Bouldnor and Hampstead area, both Sites of Special Scientific Interest to Yarmouth's east. Next up should be The Needles at Alum Bay, the famed three chalk stacks on the island's west side. Take the chair lift for smashing views over the red cliffs of Alum, then stick around for the area's other attractions, including a golf course, sweet factory and funfair. If you do decide to get the car out on your Tapnell Farm stay, a wealth of attractions is within easy driving distance, such as the 80,000 acres of Robin Hill Country Park, the fably odd amusement park Blackgang Chine, the Isle of Wight Steam Railway for a gentle puff along five and a half miles of scenic countryside, and fishing, coastal walks and a safe sandy beach at Ventnor's Steephill Cove. Newport is nine miles from the farm.
