  • Small pop-up site on the edge of the South Downs National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from Winchester; half an hour from Marwell Zoo
  • Spacious pitches on a working farm; campfire wood for sale
Splendid Hampshire countryside views and plenty of peace and quiet are what’s on offer at Woodlands Camping. This small-scale pop-up site is just on the northern edge of the South Downs National Park about five minutes’ drive south of the village of Ropley. If you’re after clubhouses, arcades and on-site entertainment you’ll want to look elsewhere: this site on a working farm is all about the fresh air, the rural peace and the lovely views. The folk that run the site have deliberately limited the number of pitches available in order to ensure plenty of space for everyone, and kept the amenities to just the essentials of toilets, showers and a washing-up area. There’s a ‘leave no trace’ policy in place here, with guests all encouraged to do their bit to preserve the environment around them (and that stretches to being asked not to feed the farm’s horses, as much as they might bat their eyelashes at you in hope…) Campfires and barbecues are permitted but you’ll need to keep them in a suitable container off the ground; there’s wood available to buy on site from locally managed woodland. Pick up supplies for your barbecue (or picnics while you’re out exploring the countryside) at the village store, or head to the bigger supermarkets in Winchester or Petersfield, both about 20 minutes’ drive away.

The Clearing unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: We had a perfect weekend at Woodlands Camping. If you're in to tranquility, woodland walks, fire pits and being at one with nature, then it is the place for you. Jason, who runs it, is very friendly and helpful. We have no negatives from the experience.

The Clearing unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: We loved the campsite, very quiet and peaceful! Toilets were nice and loads of good walks to do from the site.

Disliked: We were told not to drive up the small hill with us all in the car to avoid skidding - granted we didn’t follow these instructions as it was raining a lot so we were all in the car at that was on us. The owner saw us at the top of the hill (we had no issues driving up it) and he got really angry and started swearing at us… which was a bit of an unwarranted reaction and made us leave the site not feeling great.

From the manager: Thanks for your visit and i appreciate your feedback. It can be a little frustrating that seemingly intelligent people can't follow instructions to please allow the driver to get the car out before the other four people get in the car to avoid skidding or getting stuck and helping to reduce any damage to the land....and as you stated 'granted we did not follow the instructions'! were not 'at the top of the hill ', and unfortunately did cause some easily avoidable damage..i'm glad that otherwise you enjoyed the site and would be welcome back anytime.

Great site overall, mildly tainted with pricing structure though.

The Clearing unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Cleanliness and ease of access, very quiet and as described in terms of location and environment. Communication and details via Jason were very clear and prompt.

Disliked: Website states £12 for logs and cites ‘unlimited’ but we had to pay twice for 2 bags. Misleading. Also membership to a club with a separate one time fee is mandated to stay here.

From the manager: thanks for your feedback, and glad that you enjoyed the site . The person making the booking must be a member of the GCC and Just to clarify that the Logs are priced 'per bag' not a single fee for 'unlimited logs', misunderstood rather than misleading . hope to welcome you again soon..J

The Meadow unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: This is such a lovely campsite - beautiful scenery, can’t hear anything but the owls and grasshoppers, very peaceful, so much space across several acres and not overcrowded. Perfect off grid camping. Easy to find and a short drive to some great local pubs and villages. The owner was also very helpful and responsive before and during the stay. The cooking equipment provided with the bell tents was really useful and we cooked all our meals over the fire.

Disliked: The shower was a bit cold on one of the mornings but that was to be expected at such a rural spot and we didn’t mind at all. (And The shower was warm on the first day). The fire wood was a little expensive compared to other sites. The beds in the glamping tents were a bit uncomfortable and quite small if you are a tall person.

The Clearing unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Great welcome, really good communication and directions. We spent hours wondering in the massive woodlands and chilled on the meadow where we had pitched our tent. Fire wood provided with fire pits so no filled the car with dirty fire pit etc. Showers on site with modern portal ops and a container with decent toilet. Had phone signal and 4G so good for work or family calls. Great location we are definitely staying again. Thanks Tony

Disliked: Nothing to mention at all.

Local attractions

That South Downs location means lots of scope for walks and bike rides in gorgeous scenery. If you don’t know where to start, perhaps head for popular spots like the Queen Elizabeth Country Park or Harting Down (both about a half-hour drive) or park in West Meon (10 minutes) for a walk on the 10-mile Meon Valley Trail. There are plenty of options for different days out too: literary fans may like to drop in at Jane Austen’s House (15 minutes), while those with more of a scientific outlook explore the exhibits at Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium (15 minutes). National Trust estates at Hinton Ampner (15 minutes) and Uppark (half an hour) are worth visiting as well. The exotic animals, activities and adventure playgrounds make Marwell Zoo (half an hour) a top pick for family outings, and there are plenty of interesting things to seek out in Winchester (20 minutes) too. For a more relaxed outing, maybe a steam-powered ride on the Mid Hants Railway Watercress Line (15 minutes) will fit the bill?
