Zebras, tigers and bokibokies await in these handsome Hampshire surrounds – taking the kids to see Marwell Zoo's multitude of beasts is likely to make for some very happy hols indeed. Marwell Resort is within walking distance of this much-loved menagerie and is home to plenty of adventurous action in its own right – head here if you like the sound of oodles of outdoor activities in a pretty lakeside setting. The team at Marwell Resort have been instructing for more than 25 years, so they're well qualified to help you try out sports like archery, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting. Please note that many of these activities have a minimum age restriction applied- please check directly with the site. The site lake has a total of nine swims available for anglers (mega-sized carp can be found in its waters, including whoppers weighing up to 45 pounds). Surrounded as it is by trees, it also looks pretty fine (especially at sundown) and is a popular spot with local wildlife. Liked: Facilities were good for the kids. Boys loved the adventure golf, walks in the woods and the lake was a really nice area.
We had a nice enclosed and small campsite round the back of the lodges. Felt more in nature.
Service from staff was very good. Helpful, kind, knowledgeable.

Disliked: Showers and toilets weren't great.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We truly value all constructive feedback, as it helps us continue to improve the experience we offer our guests. However, we would like to clarify a few of the points you raised:

Our outdoor activities are extremely popular and do tend to get booked up in advance. However, please note that our soft play area and adventure golf do not require pre-booking, so there is always something available for families to enjoy on-site.

We're sorry to hear that you found our toilet facilities to be cramped. We are aware that with a high number of guests on site, occasional maintenance issues can arise. Please be assured that our housekeeping and maintenance teams monitor the facilities throughout the day to address any concerns as quickly as possible.

Regarding the peacocks—yes, they do enjoy making their presence known! However, many of our guests find the abundance of wildlife on site to be one of the highlights of their stay. We believe the natural surroundings add to the unique charm and experience of our park.

We appreciate your feedback and hope this offers some clarity. If you have any further questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us directly.

Kind regards,
Team Marwell

Liked: We really enjoyed the facilities here: mini golf, a restaurant/bar area and great tent pitches with plenty of space. The children loved the play area and exploring the woods, and were kept engaged for hours!

Disliked: We loved most of our stay here and would happily come back on repeat, except for one big problem...the ablution facilities here are absolutely terrible!! The water was ALWAYS cold - cold showers, cold water at the taps, cold water to wash up dishes. Just awful to go camping and have no hot water! The bathrooms were also filthy all the time and honestly never looked like they had been cleaned. The taps at the sink spray out water with such force that we were soaked every time we tried to wash our hands.

Liked: the pitches were great; level and on good ground, with nice spacing between other pitches, we booked on archery and axe throwing which the kids enjoyed. the food was lovely and the staff were incredibly helpful. Lovely grounds, with good walk routes.

Disliked: The axe throwing was good but i don't think it needed 90mins. you could have had smaller groups and half the time and the participants would have been able to throw more with less waiting around.
The pizza's were amazing but they struggled to keep up with demand and we had to wait over an hour.

Liked: Nice site. Near the zoo. Enjoyed the quad bike activity. Nice big pitches.

Disliked: Toilets not well cleaned. No hot water for 2 out of 4 nights. Toilet paper constantly ran out and generally disgusting.
Loud music played by guests which the rules stated was not allowed. Dogs not well looked after by guests.

Liked: Great location, good amount of space for the tent, amazing pizzas. Lots of space to run the kids around and play various games. A really quiet site.

Disliked: The showers were very cold and mainly just a trickle. The toilets and shower block felt quite dirty and that they needed to be checked more regularly, the toilets kept being blocked.

Liked: The staff, both in the restaurant and through the resort itself (on reception, cleaners, everyone) worked exceptionally hard. They were really helpful, both before our trip and during. The cleaners worked hard at keeping the toilets/showers clean. This is our fourth visit to Marwell and we still enjoy it as much as we did the first time we visited. The kids love the softplay, play area and the mini golf. The evening entertainment was also enjoyable.

Disliked: The high-ropes weren't on, which was understandable, but by not knowing, this prevented us from booking other activities in advance, which were then obviously fully booked.

Liked: Lovely field with wild grass behind us so attractive pitch. Play Park, adventure golf and the restaurant was brilliant. Ice creams were a reasonable price which was a surprise as so many put prices up when they have a captured audience.

Disliked: The amount of pitches to a shower block was insane! Never have i seen 3 fields of campers sharing one toilet and shower block. This needs sorting! There was no hot water all weekend for showers or washing up. This was an expensive pitch and its not much to expert hot water. Lots of people complaining. Very disappointing. Overuse meant they also werent clean.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We truly value all constructive feedback, as it helps us continue to improve the experience we offer our guests. However, we would like to clarify a few of the points you raised:

We have two shower blocks on site, offering a total of 30 showers and 24 toilets, which is well within the recommended provision for the number of camping pitches we offer.

During your stay, the site owner personally took responsibility for cleaning the shower blocks. He began his work each day at 5:30 AM and continued to check and maintain the facilities throughout the day, ensuring that soap dispensers and toilet rolls were regularly restocked and that the areas remained clean and dry.

While we did experience a brief issue with the hot water in one of the blocks over the weekend, a plumber was called immediately, and the issue was resolved within two hours. Our second shower block remained fully operational with hot water throughout the weekend.

We appreciate your feedback and hope this offers some clarity. If you have any further questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us directly.

Kind regards,
Team Marwell

Local attractions

Marwell Zoo (five minutes' drive) has over 140 different species to admire – you can also leave the car back at base and stroll over (about 20 minutes) for a pedestrian safari. Paultons Park (25 minutes' drive) is another perennial fave for family-oriented days out – here you can meet Peppa Pig, crash down log flumes or opt for wanders through a dinosaur-filled forest. The South Downs National Park has some truly splendid hiking trails, including the 100-mile-long South Downs Way (the trail starts 15 minutes down the road in Winchester). Mountain bikers also have plenty to choose from around these parts – an exhilarating bike track through the woods is on hand in the nearby village of Bishopstoke (10 minutes). The gorgeous New Forest National Park (25 minutes) is also within easy reach, and one of the best ways to get around is by open-top tour bus. There are three routes to choose from – it all comes down to whether you prefer vistas of heather-covered heathland or coastal explores. Speaking of the sea, beaches like Lepe and Highcliffe Castle (both 40 minutes) are very much worth the journey (make sure to pack jelly shoes and a towel if at all tempted).
