  • Pop-up camping with spectacular views over Hampshire countryside
  • Stockbridge restaurants and pubs, golf and riding five minutes’ drive
  • Back-to-basics woodland pitches with abundant wildlife; dark skies sit
Only take photographs and leave only footprints is the ethos at Goar Knap, with pop-up wild camping pitches set in a field where a mobile US Army hospital was established ahead of D-Day during World War II. The site is backed by woodland and has huge open views to the south over Hampshire countryside. Each pitch has ample space to park next to your tent, drinking water is on hand and firewood for firepits and barbecues (please place them on the bricks provided) is free of charge. Not feeling it when it comes to alfresco cooking? Stockbridge restaurants and pubs are five minutes’ drive away. Out and about around the site, you’ll come across many microhabitats in the wood, designed to attract insects that support into the local wildlife ecosystem – and don’t be surprised if you see roe deer, muntjac, badgers, foxes or hares. Look up into the skies and you might spot kites, buzzards, sparrow hawks and ravens too. There are hives on the southern edge of the woods; please try not to disturb the bees. On cloudless nights, starlight and the moon are your only guiding lights, so you have a dazzling display of stars – but it is essential to bring a good torch with you.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: We had a great night here while walking the Test Way. It is a lovely peaceful site run by Gordon and his family - not like some places where you can feel like you are camping in a car park. The site sits between rolling views of the Hampshire countryside on one side, and then woodland on the other, so there's lots of nature and wildlife to enjoy. Toilets are clean and well maintained and there are plenty of tree stumps you can repurpose for furniture if you're like us and travelling light!

Disliked: One thing to bear in mind if you're approaching on foot - the road the entrance is on is quite busy and there are no pavements.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Myself and my partner went up for the bank holiday weekend and the campsite was the most beautiful, peaceful place. That being said, everything and anything you wanted was a short drive away. We got the tranquility at the campsite whilst having a beautiful high street and activities just a short drive away. Our host and owner of the campsite, Gordon, was the most welcoming and wonderful host. Very different to other campsites we have been to. It felt almost like a home away from home. Would highly recommend. We will definitely be back!!!

Disliked: We should have stayed a few more days !!!!

Liked: We really liked the wild camping feel but with the bonus of fresh water and toilet facilities. There were lovely views and it was great to be surrounded by nature, we particularly enjoyed watching the hares chasing each other around the site. The owner was great being very helpful and having good local knowledge.
