  • Luxury adults-only shepherd’s hut on a rural Hampshire smallholding
  • Half an hour’s drive to Salisbury, and 35 minutes to Stonehenge
  • Welcome pack, hot tub and pizza oven; sheep and alpacas on site
Got a vision of a countryside break with just sheep as neighbours? How about alpacas? Hunker down in Hampshire countryside at Bentley's Glamping, a luxurious and adults-only shepherd’s hut (more like a mini-hotel really…) and you’ll look out over the two species grazing side by side. Set down a private gravel track on an eight-acre smallholding five minutes’ drive from West Tytherley, with views across the paddock to Bentley Wood beyond, this wood-clad shepherd’s hut is a masterpiece of design. It’s packed with references to rural traditions – a split stable door, cast-iron wheels and a log-burning stove – yet paired with contemporary comforts like a powerful ensuite shower, mains electricity and instant hot water in the shower. The curved window above the large double bed allows you to stargaze on clear nights, and during the day you can fold the bed back into the end wall, providing extra space for pottering around. Outside, designer furniture and decking await, along with a Scandinavian hot tub, where you can simmer away with a glass of bubbly. Other headline features include the woodfired pizza oven, and there are lots of smaller touches too: towels, toiletries and tea are provided, along with a complimentary breakfast hamper on your arrival. Books, games and a radio take care of any bad-weather days, and a wooden wheelbarrow sits in the car park to help you get your luggage from car to hut. Friendly owners Peter and Georgie are happy to recommend a local pub or point you in the direction of the scenic footpath through Bentley Wood.

Local attractions

There’s simply loads of history around the site. Salisbury (half an hour’s drive) has many surprises, including a copy of the Magna Carta in the impressive Gothic-era cathedral, and the fine Iron Age hill fort and castle ruins at Old Sarum (25 minutes). Winchester (40 minutes) has a striking cathedral of its own, the famed Round Table of Arthurian legend in the medieval Great Hall, and peaceful walks along the River Itchen. Stonehenge (35 minutes) offers a glimpse into Neolithic England at its mysterious standing stones, as well as the chance to tour a replica stone-age village. For a change from history to natural history, you can see raptor flying displays and handle the birds at the Hawk Conservancy Trust Bird of Prey Centre (half an hour) or visit the Highland cows and rare Eriskay ponies at Cholderton Rare Breeds Farm (25 minutes). Anglers can test their mettle in Hampshire chalk streams or go fly fishing for trout and salmon on the River Test (20 minutes), and keen golfers can tee off at several golf courses within half an hour’s drive.
